refusing to sleep during the day

Hi there I have a 2.5 ds who is very often refusing to sleep during the day and so is incredibly cranky all afternoon til bedtime. He is also waking at 5am most mornings. I think he is probably about to drop all day sleep but just wondered what others found at this age sleep wise? My dh insists on getting him to sleep in the day (will spend hours at it) which I think is pointless and stressful for all concerned. help!

I've just checked one of my many, many, many books on sleep, and it says that most children will have dropped daytime naps by age 3, i.e. drop it between 2 and 3.

The other advice I've come across is from Ferber (he of the controlled crying fame), and he would say never to try for a nap for longer than 30 mins using his progressive waiting technique.

So I would say your DH is wasting his time and causing unnecessary stress all round...
