Yes Egg! No Egg! Yes Egg! No Egg! etc

DS (3yrs) has schizophrenic tantrums where he relentlessly contradicts himself. For example..

"would you like some egg?"

"yes egg"

"Ok, here you go.."

"No egg!"

"Ok"

"YES EGG!!" "NO EGG!"

...and repeat, for 40mins.

Is this normal?

Is there any solution?

my 2.5yo does it too, it drives us MENTAL! The only thing we've come up with is to say, RIGHT, NO EGG, and not give it to him.

His childminder uses this approach and it works for while he is there, but sadly not for us.

yeah it's normal.

i usually say "ok ds, i'll leave the egg here, then you can have it if you want it. or if you don't want it just leave it"

MrsKitty · 18/12/2009 21:58

Mine still does this (2.10). I do similar to yesterday and put it on a separate plate - if he wants it he can have it, if not he can leave it. Usually leave it on the table for a little while after the meal too as invariably as soon as I clear away he'll decide he then wants it

normal

I do as thisisyesterday does - keeps me calmer than trying to enforce one or the other and dd retains the illusion of control

(that usually would have been a face but It's been a long and very trying day...

Normal. Just ignore completely. Tell him that you will speak to him when he calms down and then don't get drawn in.
