My 6 month old baby is growling...

My daughter is 24 weeks, coming up on her 6 month "birthday", and has started growling.

Oddly enough, she only does it when sat in her bouncy chair.

She's not ill, I don't think, although she does have a bit of a cough which she is on antibiotics for, but only because it's been hanging around so long. She had the cough way before the growling started.

When she growls, her face goes red, as if she was straining for a poo, but she doesn't poo when she growls, and isn't constipated. She doesn't make the noise when she does poo.

Has anyone else had this? Is she just learning a new sound? Sometime's it's accompanied by a high pitched squawk at the end of the growl. Does it MEAN anything? I am wondering if (since she has also rolled for the first time in the last week) she is expressing frustration at being dumped in her bouncy chair while I am out of the room. Or is that way more advanced a reaction than any six month old could muster?

My 6 month old does that. I also think he's straining for a poo, but no poo!

I think its just one of their sounds.

He also shrieks at the top of his lungs. That one I could do without!!

She is just testing out those vocal cords, and showing you her new trick . Its perfectly normal, all three of mine have done this at some point.

Both my DC went through a phase of growling at about that age. I've no idea why and it stopped as suddenly as it started. I think it's just another one of those odd developmental phases TBH!

It is odd though and humorous at times too. We even have a family song about it...

Thanks ladies. It has been playing on my mind all day, should I worry, should I not worry - this sounds like a resounding vote for not worry!

MadameMoe, care you share your family song? Swap you for "Let's Change Your Bum (buddle um-pum-pum)", "Bath-a-bath-a-bath-time" or "Whatever it is mummy's really sorry, but please go to sleep now like that b*stard daddy"

Lol. I'd meant to delete the bit about the song, hence the strange repetition of 'odd'...

Oh well. I've only got my self to blame

(Note: DC wore/wear cloth nappies)

OOOOOOH. He's Captain Big Bottom!
OOOOOOH. He sails the seven seeeeeas!
OOOOOOH. He's Captain Big Bottom.
Hear him growl! Hear him growl!
He's Captain Big Bottom.

Repeat a number of times, depending on the devastating-ness of the poo.

DS's name has done a lovely stinky poo,

When DS is crying for no apparent reason:

Oh no, what could the matter be.
Oh no, what could the matter be
Oh no, what could the matter be
why is DS's name so sad today?

Mummy loves her little boy
Mummy loves her pride and joy
Mummy wants to know why DS's name is so sad today.

Repeat ad nauseaum until DS has quieted down. Second verse can be sung using Daddy, Grandma, etc.

I also clicked on this thread to see what the worry could possibly be re a growing 6mth old baby...

but loving the rapid u-turn to silly songs, I think you should all start a confessions thread, state your silly song and occupation for the record
