my DD is 5 months old, she sleeps for 12 hours at night not a peep from her, but she only cat naps during the day. ive tried staying home for weeks now to try and get her into a routine but she only sleeps for around 30 minutes 2 times a day. is this ok and is she getting enough, she is happy and curious and enjoys watching things but my friend said her DS slept for 2-3 at a time during the day.

I wouldn't worry, she's probably just getting all her sleep at night. Maybe if your DD had longer daytime naps she wouldn't sleep as much at night. My DS is 5 months and he usually sleeps throughout the night and just has a couple of short 30min naps during the day.

Sounds absolutely normal and fine

Thank goodness for that! My 4mo is exactly the same (although the last week minus the good nighttime sleep- another story!) and I've been worrying about it, while trying to go with my instinct that if she's happy it must be fine. Good to get reassurance.

if my 5 month old was sleeping through i wouldn't try to change anything...

DD2 (23 weeks) wakes 3 or 4 times a night still. she does nap in day but i would happily trade you that for a full night's sleep!!!!

My 5.5mo is doing exactly the same - 12h night-time sleep and relatively short naps during the day (now not more than 1h but usu around 40mins). I'm so grateful I didn't think to worry about it

minxofmancunia · 14/12/2009 21:00

wow! am that your 5 month old sleeps for 12 hours solid at night, expect a lot of parents would happily forego the daytime naps for that!

If she's not showing signs (eye rubbing, yawning, general grouchiness) of tiredness during the day I wouldn't worry about it. She'll start to sleep more when she crawls/walks and gradually the two naps will prob merge into one longer nap, for my dd it was around age 1.

Sounds just like my son, he's done 12 hours a night since 3 months and almost no daytime napping. It's totally OK. Count yourself lucky!
