Sleep problems and hair pulling

Hello ladies,

My approaching 21 month old has had an obsession with my hair since he was about 9 months old. Unfortunately I have allowed it to develop into a 'comforter'. He was never interested in a dummy so we never encouraged it. Anyway, within the last 4 weeks he has, without fail, for approx 3 consecutive days at a time, woken up at silly o'clock (1 or 2am) and will not got back to sleep until a good 2/3 hours later and will consistently tug and pull at my hair (maybe in frustration). In the past it has always been a comforter to him. Whenever he goes to sleep in his bed he gently plays with my hair and falls asleep clutching it. But when it's the middle of the night it's not gentle, it's painful and by the time he does fall asleep my scalp really stings. Obviously when he hurts I tell him 'no' but I must be confusing him as I allow it to continue the rest of the time. I will add that he has always co-slept the 2nd half of the night. I will also mention that we don't think it's teething problems.
Does anyone have any advice on this subject which must be quite a strange one. Should I wean him off my hair?
