switching from ranitidine to omeprazole - night from hell

My DD2 (20 weeks) is suffering from silent reflux. She had been on ranitidine for over 2 weeks and had been on the maximum dose (3mg/ kg body weight 3 x a day) for the last 2 days. Things had not really moved on.

Consultant changed her to Omeprazole yesterday. we are to go back in 2 wks time.

Well we had the absolute night from hell (and it isn't over yet) am sat rocking buggy and typing, she has calmed down. We have been having horrific nights, 2 hourly waking with scream/ cry but this was on another level.

She had 2 of the 3 doses of ranitidine yesterday and then stopped on Drs orders and gave her the first dose of Omeprazole at about 4pm yesterday

My questions are:

  1. Seems to me Ranitidine must have been doing something as stopping has coincided with massive decline, could missing the 1 dose yesterday have made her so much worse...?

  2. How long before the Omeprazole kicks in thought this worked more immediately

  3. Pls tell me omeprazole will sort this or at least work better than ranitidine

Getting beyond desparate...

I'm on omeprazole. It takes 3-4 days to start working. I know adults can double up ranitidine and omeprazole. Might be worth checking whether you can do this.

i don't know what to do, the weird thing was yesterday in the day she was the best i had seen her in a long time and that was on day 2 of maximum dose of ranitidine (had been on it in total for 2 and a bit weeks) so although we'd had a cr@ppy night thought maybe it was working. had appt with consultant paediatrician who said change to omezaprole, sort of wondered about keeping on the ranitidine for a few days to see whether it had finally kicked in but went with what doctor said in the end.

now i am just wondering whether i should stop all the blessed medication and see how she is with nothing....

paediatrician said it was either colic, silent reflux or cows milk intolerance (unlike she said as DD BF completely and no other symptoms like exzema etc).

i am so confused and hate the thought that we have made things worse for her by giving her this medication.

Riven - in your experience did side effects start after having had a single dose of omezaprole?

Will give it one more day and if no better will stop everything i think and see what happens...

Do not know about use of these drugs in children but both Ritidine and Omeprazole caused me a lot of stomach pain as well as pain in my muscles and joints. I can only take Gaviscon. I also went on a coeliac diet cutting out all milk and gluten containing food that was very beneficial.

The side effects you describe are common with these type of proton pump inhibitor drugs such as Ritidine and Omeprazole. Your DD could well also be milk intolerant.

i personally love omeprazole...lwas diagnosed with a hiatus hernia after ds (3.5years)and i have been on it since, if i miss one tablet a day i ge awful reflux...it takes about 3 hours to kick in again with me.

After having dd (12 weeks) it settled a bit (lost 4 stone whilst pregnant) had gestational diabetes and think my hernia has gone down a bit so i need a tablet every few days now, can cope with a glug of gaviscon a day now.

I dont know where i would be without my omeprazole!
