I feel we have done the right thing but it is a weird position to be in

All of us set to go swimming today. Has been months since all of us have gone together. We weren't going to the pool that DS1 wanted to go to so he decided he wouldn't go. This meant I couldn't go either. DS1 was rude to DH so he asked him to do writing practice while he was gone. DS1 has been in tears and clearly feels badly done too. I normally end up giving in but feel that he needs to learn that there are consequences. He wasn't happy with the pool of choice and said he wouldn't go, therefore he doesn't get to go at all.

I am upstairs ironing and leaving him to it. I have given him ideas of what to do but have made it clear that he has to do what DH has said.

It feels right, if about 6 years too late.

Well done, you did the right thing

I have given him a maths puzzle book to do, he then appears, crying, that he has lost the page he was on. I said to him to go and look for it. he storms off and says he will get a bag and suffocate himself, which he then tries to do. He is now sat outside the bedroom where I am ironing and throwing things, I said he will tidy up anything he throws and pay for anything he breaks. He has just thrown his pocket money at me and is now crying.

I think your comment "I usually end up giving in" is very telling here.
