Tantrums out of the blue

Hi, this is my first post.
I am going insane at the moment at my little girl's tantrums.
She will be 3 in January and keeps having the most hideous tantrums I've ever seen a child have.
Some times they are completely out of the blue, ie, we'll be playing with her lego and she'll suddenly start grunting, pulling at her clothes, before the screaming starts.
Othertimes there is a 'reason', ie, I've picked the wrong trolley at the supermarket or something.
These tantrums are totally out of control, she hurls anything she can get her hands on, bites herself and screams like she's being murdered.
When she does this, I put her in her room and tell her she can't come out until she calms down.
I'm just at a loss at where this has come from, she gets plenty of love and attention.
Also, she only ever does this with me or my OH, never with other family or at day nursery.
Please someone reassure me that it's not just my child and she will grow out of this.

Be very reassured, it is in no way just your child and she will grow out of it. You're going about it the right way by ignoring it IMhumbleO and praise the lovely little girl she is when she returns to that state. Hugs and sympathies while it lasts though
