Sleeping in a cot ~ Have I left it too late?

My DS is 7 months old now and he sleeps with us....on our bed.....he loves it
But on speaking with my friends...I have realised that I should start to get him sleeping in his cot asap (which is in our room) otherwise I'll have big probs when I will move him to the nursery when hes a little older...but I dont know how to do it. I tried last night but he kept waking up..what do I do? He was great in his first three months as he would sleep in his moses basket...but I just became lazy and would keep him on the bed with me after his 2am feed. Currently he sleeps through the night....any suggestions????? I am very determined to rectify my mistake asap!!!!!

I used to have to get dd asleep on my bed and then transfer her to cot once she was asleep. She hated the cot and would scream when she woke up in it.

At 15mths i moved her to own bedroom with matress on floor and that was much easier as she felt grown up and felt free, unlike the prison feel cots can give!

does ds have day time naps? we started by introducing the cot during those daytime sleeps and then started putting dd in at night time. if you can, feed your ds in his own room and when you put him down, stay with him until he settles. when he wakes, stay in his room. eventually he will get used to his own room.

If you want him in his cot you will just have to do it!! No easy way. put him in. When he cries go give him a cuddle and say night night and put him down again...its the contolled crying thing I suppose. Dont leave for a long time to cry though I think they should knoe you are there when they need you. You cant give in though as then they learn 'ah if I cry I get my own way'!!!
Does he sleep in cot during the day?

nadia, I dont think its as simple as to say that you've left it too late. He may (or may not) be at the wrong age to go into a cot right now, but in another couple of months, he may think its a little house, or a grown up bed, and love the idea!
Id let the side down at first though, as cot=prison instead of mummy and daddy's bed doesn't sound like a winner! fran's idea is great, sort of thing that would have worked with my children too!

I only moved my DS2 to the cot when he was 6 months, and only stopped bringing him in my bed at all in the last week. I don't think there's a "too late" for the move - do it when you want.

In other words, if it's working well at the moment, don't worry about it. You can do controlled crying (if you can face it) later. You can leave him in your bed as long as you're both happy with it.

How is it going? Are you putting in a cot because YOU want to or because you feel you should?!

Well I have started to try putting him in the cot for his daytime naps...but he wont take it for more than half an hour!!!! Its comforting to know that I havent left it too late...but I'll try for a week if it doesnt work then I'll just take it at DS's pace whenever he wants to....I think being too regimental can be damaging too....?

I've got a similar problem - I don't mind ds (nearly 8mths) being in our bed when we're asleep, but am beginning to mind that I can't put him in his cot to sleep in the early evening. I'm trying to use the no-cry sleep solution , which is good (try it!) and has suggestions about stretching out the length of naps etc. It's going quite slowly for us though, mainly because ds will not just fall asleep - he'll keep himself awake until he's too overtired to sleep unless I'm feeding him or dp walks him round the room.

Hallaluah! Success! I have moved him to his cot 2 days ago and it hadnt been as painful as I had thought! Hes played up on day 1 but day 2 is brilliant! He has been sleeping through! Thank you all for your support and advice!

My ds was successfully transfered at 6 months, so I don't think it's too late.
