thumb-sucking - do they suck on their dominant hand?

Just a curiosity really. my dd is only 11 weeks and has started sucking her thumb, on her left hand. one of my friends said that would mean she is left handed. do you think so? DD1 is a thumb sucker, appears to be right-handed and sucks either, though the right is preferable.
do you think there is anything in it?

not neccessarily

DS1 - right-handed, sucks his right thumb

DS2 - right handed also, sucks his left

mustrunmore · 03/11/2009 08:54

Opposite hand, ime.

olivo · 03/11/2009 08:57

my theory was opposite hand, so you can do things with your dominant hand whilst sucking your thumb but my friend is convinced (she likes to be right!!)

I think it's more likely to be with opposite hand (I am right handed and sucked my left thumb, DS is right handed and sucks his left thumb) but not necessarily as DD is right handed and sucks her right thumb .

Not sure that my sample size is quite representative of a large amount of thumb suckers though

ZacharyQuack · 03/11/2009 09:13

DD2 right handed, sucks right thumb.

meep · 03/11/2009 09:15

dd1 right handed - sucks left hand - right dominant hand needed for accompanying hair twiddling

olivo · 03/11/2009 09:16

so, i need to increase my sample size.....

Right hand dominate and right thumb - even now.

Wilts · 03/11/2009 09:17

Ds1 is right handed and sucks right thumb, alongside holding raggedy old teddy against his nose . He is also nearly 13

olivo · 03/11/2009 09:22

wilts! I have a friend now in his 30s who still sucks his thumb - must ask about raggedly old teddy.....

Left thumb and a right hander here.

DS2 is a left thumb sucker. Reaches for things with his right hand but too early to tell really if this will be the dominant arm

Linnet · 03/11/2009 09:35

My dd2 sucks her left thumb but is right handed.

Wilts · 03/11/2009 09:36

Olivio- The teddy is most vital, and the problems it causes if I wash the manky thing. Ds claims it doesn't 'smell right' when it is clean .

He is quite a well rounded child really

olivo · 03/11/2009 09:38

Wilts, sounds like my DH and his pillow - but DH is downright weird

My dd sucks thumb on non-dominant hand but I used to (really, I have given up) suck thumb of dominant so I'm not convinced there's a pattern.

BertieBotts · 03/11/2009 09:41

I distinctly remember realising if I used my right hand to draw with, I could suck my thumb at the same time So I have a theory - dominant hand if they stop early on, opposite hand if they are still doing it past 2 or so (handedness is only set at about 2 anyway I have heard)

Slubberdegullion · 03/11/2009 09:53

Both my dds suck their non dominant thumbs.

FromGirders · 03/11/2009 10:00

Both dcs suck non-dom thumbs. Dom hands needed to twiddle something.

Haylstones · 03/11/2009 10:34

Is my ds the only one who sucks both thumbs? Not at the same time, obviously, but he doesn't seem to have a preference (20months). He does need both hands as he sucks a thumb on one hand while stroking his neck with the other...
