Toddler won't talk

My Ds 30 months won't talk. Has dd(5) to relay on doing all the talking. DS will say few words and mutter in his own language but would rather hold hand and take you to anything he wants. Have sent him to nursery 2 AM's a week to try to improve his speech. Been to see HV and has said will refer him for SP therepy also said not worried as he interacts well without using lang.It's very fustratating as Dd was very quick at talking. Am i right to be concerned or am i just being paranoid.

I think you're being paranoid. He'll just talk when he's ready (as with everything).My dd1 didn't talk till about that time but I loved her being able to communicate everything she wanted without actual words.Perhaps you were expecting him to do things at the same time as your dd?

Dash- there are other recent threads on this. Is he pointing? If he is pointing then you have nothing to worry about. If he isn't pointing then you need to see a speech and language therapist.
Hope this isn't too blunt- but it is "the" test for problems really.

Other good sugns are things like waving, and using other gestures, and being able to follow a point, but the big one is him pointing himself.

My dp's uncle barely spoke at all and when he did he spoke in his own language which only one of his brothers could understand until he was gone 4. My ex-husband also didn't speak until he was gone 4 because he had two older brothers who used to do everything for him so he didn't need to. Hope this helps you stop worrying. He's probably just being lazy and has your dd to do it for him.

I think the key is that your ds has your dd to talk for him. This happened with my poor brother, who everyone thought had some kind of problem, when really it was that he had me (v. chatty/bossy big sister) to do and say everything for him! Has your dd started school full-time? Maybe that will change things for your ds, who'll have to start talking?

JimJams - the 'pointing' thing is very helpful to know. Our ds is only 18 months, but isn't really talking, but he does point (a lot!) and pull us around the place to what he wants etc.

It is frustrating though when you know other Mums with toddlers who have millions of words and sentences....

Yep he's fine then dot1. Honestly. My 16 month old DS2 isn't really talking yet but he points all the time.

The first "sign" I had of the problems ahead with DS1 was when I realised that he wasn't pointing at 17 months. I started to confide in people my worries and they pooh poohed it - as DS1 was so obviously sociable and affectionate. I used to mutter lamely "but he's not pointing"- people would look at me as if I was crazy- but it is a really big thing in language development. It really is.

Thanks for all the supporting advice given by everyone. Yes he does point at things, waves goodbye to people and understands everything that is said to him He is also a very loveing boy who likes lots of kisses and cuddles. He also plays really well with friends children. It's just that all family keep pushig the fact that he isn't talking and i was just getting very worried and paranoid.
