22month old won't go to sleep in foreign place

Hello-my 22month old is in a perfect routine at home. He sleeps for nearly 2 1/2 hours during the day and goes down at 6.30pm every night and wakes at 6am EXCEPT when we go on holiday and he is sleeping in our room.

I keep to his routine as normal, he will have his normal day sleep in a the travel cot but come night time he performs, crys and has tantrums. Leaving him in the room with a closed door seems to make the tantrums worse and he becomes hysterical.

Evenutally he ends up in our bed, three hours after his normal bedtime.

It makes holidaying with him unbearable as we all become exhausted.

Please advise how we can break this behaviour. Thank you.

Use the travel cot for 2 weeks at home for day and night sleeps before you go away so it smells and feels very familar and the place he has been sleeping.
