6 DD Year Old Used The Word Sex In Piece Of Writing At School

They were asked to write a piece titled 'When I Grow Up' and DD just wrote a list which said. "Shop, cook, meet a boyfriend, have sex, marry'. The teacher pulled me aside and just wanted to check that I knew that she knew that word and that it's unusual for a 6 year old to use that word. A couple of months ago DD asked me about babies and how they are made and I said that the daddy has a seed and the mummy has an egg and they put the two together and that is what sex is. And that was that and off she went and it hasn't been mentioned since. Until today! Should I feel really bad? I didn't go into anymore detail. Didn't think I had done something wrong or irresponsible at the time. What do you think?

I think that teacher was just checking that you had introduced the word and that she hadn't picked it up from somewhere else where (if it was somewhere else) it may be considered potentially sinister, and something that you might want to be aware of.

nothing wrong IMO, certainly not with your explanations to her.

She has used it in an appropriate context (ie her expectations of adult life), she hasn't put it forwards in a 'smutty' kind of way. If she had said 'meet a boyfriend, marry, make a baby' the teacher probably wouldn't have mentioned it - she has just used a correct word in its context.

Feel better now. After I had said my piece I just didn't know what else to say and tried to be light hearted by making quips such as 'the only thing she's forgotten to include is divorce' which were met with a blank stare. I usually feel good about the fact that my daughter is quite pertinent and logical but was beginning to think I should have told her a load of gobblydegook instead.

I wouldn't be worried about the sex but would be making my daughter edit it to include travel, a glittering career etc.

Gawd, it might as well have been. About a year ago I remember overhearing her using the word sexy so kids her age must use it, but clearly without knowing what it is. It's parent's evening next month so will be able to talk about it again.

I'd be delighted simply because it was spelt correctly . Don't be worried about it .... they have no real concept of the full meaning, just that's it's part of a process to being married and having babies. I wouldn't bother bringing it up again. Chill-ax !!
