2 month old baby not interested in dangly object s- worried!

My gorgeous 2 month old has been checked by the health visitor and doc and he doesn't want to follow the dangly toy from left to right that is one of the developmental milestones at his stage. He is doing everything else OK and focusses on our faces and smiles lots, but because he is not following the object I am really anxious about his development. Does anyone have any experience of this and what it could mean?

I think the check is to see how his eyesight is developing ie can he fix and follow an object.

Because he is smiling and focussing I wouldn't worry. Does he follow people as they pass by?

Has he seen the GP for 6 week check yet? They will check his vision more thoroughly for you.

What did the doc and HV say?

Sometimes dangly toys aren't that interesting at that stage - they prefer looking at you! Also they're still working at neck control, so it really has to be worth the effort to turn their heads. Maybe try shaking some keys so he's lured by the sound and the shininess of them and then see if he's follows them when you move them?

Thanks - will try that with the keys. he had his 6 week check, and that was when the doc checked the dangly object test. I do feel that he is normal as he is very responsive to me, but these tests make me really anxious, and feel like I can't enjoy him properly as I am constantly looking for him to perform

Dont set yourself up for a fall. So what if he isnt at a milestone.
They are averages. Some babies do it straight away, some dont.
Please enjoy every little tiny moment with your beautiful baby.
There is always something to worry about. Jabs, milk, food, weaning, bottles, cups, crawling, sitting up etc etc etc.
This time goes by so very fast. Enjoy it.

I really think he sounds very normal.Some babies just do these things in their own time.

It is really hard when they are little, lots of things can make you worry and it's impossible not too.

Try not to let it get in the way of you enjoying him and if you are feeling particularly anxious then speak to the doctor again.

Thanks ladies,you are a great help. I would hate to miss the precious time while he is young with worrying too much. Feeling a bit of baby blues just now so things a bit out of proportion.

These milestones are just guidelines and you describe your dc as responsive; he sounds fine and lovely. Dc1 was slow to hold up his head and dd2 didn't do much pointing (prior to the 2 yr check) but they are both bright and bonny children.

Sorry you've got the baby blues - found watching the adverts and the news the worst! I'd be in floods If you're feeling down for longer than just a few weeks then go and see the GP, who will be able to help. I didn't but should have done, and it took the pleasure out of what should have been a lovely time with dc1.
