Could it be time to start potty training my nearly 2 yo DD, or too early?

She has done a wee in both the potty and the 'big girl' toilet, both times she asked for it.

She has asked before for the potty or big girl toilet and just sat on them and not done anything. We have just been letting her get on with it in her own time as DD2 is only 10 weeks old so didn't want to 'overload' DD1 IYSWIM.

I am now thinking it may be time, she has just taken her (dirty) nappy off and handed it to me saying potty

DD1 will be 2 in November, do you think it could be a little too early? If not what do I do, how do I potty train her, other than a potty and a child seat for the toilet what do I need to get? I have to be honest and say that I was dreading potty training lol.

I am potty/toilet training my 2 and almost half DD. I would say go for it if you don't mind the accidents. I am loving the nappy free time my DD is having (all day except for sleep time now). I always carry around my travel pottete when we go out. If you know she can hold wee for every 1 hour and half or something that would help a lot as well. And of course cheap big girl panties (lots of them and easy stretchy trousers essential!) plastic bags for wet trousers as well!!
She used to wet about 7 trousers a day, but now it's down to about 2 or 3!! just accidents of little pee coming out and she tells me and she goes to potty to do the rest.

Thank you, I have just got back from the shops, I have bought lots of little girl knickers and 2 potties to have around the house.

That is exactly the age dd was when we did it, and she was fine. In fact since just before her 2nd birthday we have had literally 4 or 5 accidents (shes now 3.3). We had tried when she was 1.9 on the nurseries advice as they said she was ready - but she wasn't so we took the pressure off and tried a few months later.

Give at go, don't get stressed. She will probably get it, but if she doesn't you can always leave it a few weeks and then you can try again - a short time can make a lot of difference at that age.

My mum potty-trained DD1 just before her second birthday (in my defence, I was heavily pg with DD2 and had had my appendix out ). Like your DD she was ready as she was asking for the potty.

We had an upstairs and a downstairs potty, and the downstairs potty was in the livingroom for her to use at short notice. Something that helped with DD2 was knickers with pictures of her favourite characters on them - Dora didn't like getting wet. Nappy sacks are great for putting soggy clothing in till you get home. Oh, and we got a step so she could get up on the toilet if she wanted (her preferred placve for doing a poo).

I got her some in the night garden knickers lol, hopefully upsy daisy wont like getting wet I've got a step my cousin gave me for the toilet as well.

Quick question, DD has just happily sat on the potty for a few minutes but not done anything.I have praised her for sitting on the potty, but should I try to keep her on the potty until she has done something or just try her every half an hour or so on the potty?

Just keep trying her on the potty every half an hour at least (maybe even more!) Have stickers ready for the happy event of a pee/poo in the potty!

ds1 was 1 week over 2 when we potty trained and just under 2 for ds2 they were both ready and we had a few accidents but they were both ready and happy to pee/poo on the toilet/potty.
Just remember to ask frequently and look out for crossed legs and signs that she may need a wee but is too busy to ask to go.

Does anyone know what the minimum age is to start potty training? DS is 18 months and in the last week has started telling us "kaka" when he has been for a number 2 then saying "potty" so I think there is definitely an awareness of going/having been but did think that they just didn't have the muscle control before about 2 and definitely don't want to start too early.

DD would head upstairs from about 14/15 months, saying Poo and pointing to her bottom. When we tried training at about 19/20 months she wasn't ready and it caused us a lot of stress so we left it until she was nearly two. She def knew from an early age when she was having a poo, but weeing was different and she widdled EVERYWHERE when we first tried training her - despite putting her on the potty every 15 minutes! I would wait tbh.

Sounds like she's ready for potty training - being able to ask for the toilet and use it are fairly good signs!

Both of my girls were potty trained well before they were two.

Definitely saves on the cost of nappies and the waste they cause.

Gangle - babies from the age of 6 months have some sort of muscle control - in other cultures potty training takes place far earlier then here. I have a friend whose baby was fully trained at age 14 months.

Woohoo we have success (well so far anyway), DD asked to watch Thomas the Tank and she sat herself on the potty in front of the TV and did a wee while watching Thomas.

Go for it. DD trained at 23 months as well. A few months later, typical 2-year-old behaviour kicked in and I thought wow, I would have found it much more difficult to be potty-training now. So I'm glad I went with the signs of interest she showed at 23 months.

Buy a lot of leggings from H&M, Zara etc. - they've been DD's staple wear ever since she potty-trained, and if you have a lot of pairs you're less bothered about accidents.

Hi my dd also trained before age 2- her instigating not me!

All ok- about a week or two half way through where she suddenly started pooing all over the place but that has stopped now.

Primark and Asda have cheap knickers. Peppa Pig in our house!

Take few pairs out with you and a change of clothes- including socks out with you.

Thanks for all the tips ladies, DD seems to be doing very well, she managed to successfully use the potty 5 times yesterday with only 2 accidents No poos as yet though.

Every time she uses the potty she gets a chocolate button (bribery at it's best ) She especially like to sit on the potty while watching Thomas the tank lol.

Does anyone know if it is possible to get some Thomas the Tank knickers for girls?, she loves Thomas, but all I can find are boys boxers etc.

Tis blimmin annoying as I wanted to get Bob the Builder ones for my dd and couldn't find any for girls..

We voted for choc buttons for home and Haribos when we went out (less melty)

girlsyearapart, I found some of those toddler wipes (flushable ones) with Bob on the packet for DD in the pound shop. DD loves bob as well lol.

Please can someone help me, DD will not go on the potty or the toilet now and no amount of bribery is working. I don't want to push it with her and cause problems but what should I do?

My DS was the same, I potty trained him before he was 2 because he was ready. By his second birthday he was fully trained and dry through the night too a few months later.

insertwitty just leave her, don;t force it on her, just pop a nappy on if you think she's going to have an accident.
And just buy boy's thomas pants if that's what she wants.

She has done 2 wees unprompted in the potty as well, she only tells us after she has done it. Not sure how that is gonna work when we are out and about though lol.
