I am not sure how to help my DS (8).

He has always been a bit forgetful..a daydreamer and i thought he would grow out of it. I also put it down to him being a twin and that his twin brother has been the more confident twin.

But it's just not happening!! He seems to forget things i ask him to do e.g..i will ask him to go and get his socks/something from upstairs and by the time he gets to the top of the stairs he has forgotten. He might come back down and ask again, and then he runs up the stairs saying 'socks' over and over so he dosen't forget again..or he will just go upstairs and play in his room as if i haven't asked him anything.

He is below average with his reading and adds words that are not there when he is reading..or he will say 'there' or 'they' instead of 'the'.

He is terrible with lists (days of the weeks etc) and can't cope with marking other peoples work at school and gets very upset.

I have spoke to his teacher at the end of last year ans she is organizing an assessment with him and his new teacher very soon.

Does this sound like anything to you?? or am i worrying for nothing and he is just a typical 8 year old boy.

It could just be typical boy behaviour, or it could be indicative of an underlying dyslexia-type difficulty. One of the indicators for Specific Learning Difficulties is poor organisational skills, added to his reading...

The assessment should help to identify the problem and therefore strategies to help him, so it's a good thing!

It does sound like dyslexia/dyspraxia type behaviour. Coping strategies will help - and these can be taught, but should be as a result of specialist intervention.

I was about to say possilble dyslexia/dyspraxia.

Coping strategies do help, and it is good getting an assessment because then help will be there

My brother is dyslexic, and when he moved to secondary school they wanted to put him in the remedial class, my parents insisted on diagnosis and help. He is now a professor of Genetics

My friends son is dyspraxic, had loads of help, and is now doing really well and will probably train to be a dentist.

Thank-you for your replies, i will wait and see what the outcome of the assessment is. I was thinking dyslexia but he dosen't seem to get any numbers or letters the wrong way round like his older brother, i guess there must be different types.

It sounds like there is help for him if anything is wrong. Great positive comments there too- professor of genetics! how fab!
