I am bemused by ds not saying his sister's name or even having a word for her

Ds is just at that stage where he is saying new words every day.

He started with Mama and Dada.

Then essentials like 'poo' and 'up' and 'no' and 'pussycat'.

I've not counted but he must now say between 30 - 50 words, and more every day.

So why no word for his sister?

He adores her. He plays with her all the time. He follows her around like a little puppy. They are together nearly all the time.

I'm not surprised that he doesn't say her actual name because I suppose it's quite a hard one to say, and we tend to call her lots of different nicknames anyway.

But surely he should have some sound or word for her?

He says 'Dora' ffs! And 'Blue Bear'! But not 'sis'.

Why?

Have you pointed to her and said her name to him? Hve you asked hime "who is this?". Give it time.

How old are they both?

mine didn't say mum until about 2 - had words for all sorts of other things but not for me !

I think maybe he doesn't need a word because she is so close to him IYSWIM.

Maybe the fact that you say you use a lot of nicknames for her confuses him??

Perhaps he doesn't know which one to use?

Yes, we have done that, though not often. He is a neglected second born so tends to pick things up by himself rather than be subjected to Learn To Speak Bootcamp as his sister was .

I'm not worried at all, just interested. I would have put £££££ on her being his first word.

She is 3 and he is 17 months.

That is interesting. My two are EXACTLY the same age as yours, and one of DD2's first words was her sister's name, which is quite easy to say and DD1 has no nicknames. Also, since DD2 has learnt more words, she has stopped saying her sister's name so much.

My DS2 is 19 months and has about 20 words now but he doesnt say Mummy yet (or his big brothers name!) he can say woof woof though and bless you when I sneeze!

my ds2 has only recently started saying ds1's name. He is 2 next week.

He will probably say something for her soon if any of her nicknames are easy sounds for a baby. My DD (17m) can say DS's name (he is 3), although the sound at the start of the word is incorrect!

We use lots of nicknames for ds too and he has come up with a word for himself (an approximation of his own name).

THBMum - did he say lots of other words before saying his brother's name?

Yes he did, though prob only me and H can understand all of them.

My dd - 21 months - only said her big brother's name a few months ago, and still won't say her own name, even tho a)it's easy to say and b)she is very talkative in general.
I suspect it's because she knows we're waiting for certain words, so she takes her time!
