13 week old needs muslin to go to sleep with...

but am scared he will get it over his face and suffocate. I let him fall aleep with it during day as I am there to watch as he sleeps in his chair but at night he will not go to sleep without it. He nuzzles his face into it and half sucks it. Trouble is, at night I am scared he will get it over his face. I have tried cutting one into four smaller squares but he like it full size as he holds it in both hands then has the rest of it at the side of his face.

What would you do?

When I remove it once he's asleep, he wakes up fully when he realises it's gone.

My dd was like this... she just couldn't relax without it... I always stayed whilst she fell asleep, then removed it.

My DD was and stil is exactly the same. I ended up tucking one into her mosesbasket like a sheet just under her head. Once she got older we tied a knot in one corner for her to suck so she couldn't stuff too much in her mouth. She now at 1 she sleeps with 1 or 2 (3 if she can squeeze it) and loves the labels so much that her muzzy's are now called bill (la-ble) She did sleep in with us until she was nearly 1 so I was right there and checked her every few hours.

My DD (7 months) is also like this, loves her muzzy, rubs her face on it all night.

My DD is 7 months and I posted exactly the same on here a few months ago when I was worried too. What I did on advice from a wise MNetter was to put a loose knot in the middle of it and then it's less likely to get covered on their face. I give her about 3 or 4 which she can reach for in the bed.

She lies, like your lo, holding one (sometimes in each hand) and half nuzzles into it and half sucking it - I put one usually by each cheek between shoulder and head so when she turns her head it's there but she flaps them around too.

He'll be fine honest !!.....but I had the same concerns

My DD still takes her muslins (blankets) to bed with her. She was 11 last week!

DS2 did this...he put the muslin over his face to sleep. It is really thin material so never really worried about breathing through it.

We did get some odd looks if he had a nap with it over his face while in his pram.

He is 4 now and still likes to have them, but we don't have to carry one around at all times...just bedtime now really.

WasWondering - my DS was exact opposite, he used to drag his blanket around till it was filthy. Heaven forbid when I washed it, it was rejected until it had achieved a suitible level of filth

This might be a stupid idea but could you fold it up and cut lots of holes in it (like when you make a snowflake with paper)?

All 3 of my boys have loved to cuddle their 'Muz'in bed. try the loose tied suggestion. it worked for my boys. incidently they also had a dummy and i used to pull the muz through the dummy handle/ring so that they could never loose it during the night.

My 17 month old ds is obsessed with his muz and frequently goes to the muz drawer and comes back carrying about 10. He done this the other day and my 6 year old ds said he was in 'muz heaven' ( too cute)

Oh yes didn't say but my DS also has them (as well as DD as I mentioned earlier) but now he has about 20 in his bed which he sleeps on like a pillow so......(he's now 3.3 years) and tonight he was desperately searching for the "soft" one. So I thought I'd cracked the comforter thing by giving a muzzy but now he's got a favourite aaaaarrrrgh - what am I going to do.

lol my 3 1/2 year old middle ds does the same to me but his muz must have a chunky thick corner that he likes to rub. he will reject the flat cornered ones ha ha must be mad searching through about 20 muslins to find the right level of thickness.

still at least he has now gave up his dummy and muz combo.

DS2 also loves his Muslin, although in our house they are called Yummys. This was DS1s doing. Not sure why, it is just what he started calling them at a young age, and it stuck.

DS2 does sleep with it over his face quite often but is now 2, so not as much of a problem.

I was going to suggest using one as a draw sheet tucked in under the edge of the mattress, but a) not sure they are big enough and b) the loose knot seems like a good idea.

My DS has had a taggie blanket in bed with him since he was tiny and I've been similarly worried, but once he was asleep I used to just edge it under his head so there were no loose bits for him to get under iyswim. It's much smaller than a muzzy though.

Oooo the loose knot is a great idea! Thanks laydeez, will try that. I know the material is thin but I have always had issues worrying about them when they're aslep.

Incidentally, DS1 has 'raggys' (muslins cut up into smaller squares and then edged by my mother ) and has had them since he was about 6 months. He is now 2.5yrs and has to have 8 (exactly 8, no more no less ) in bed with him. He also hunts through to find the 'cold' one (?!?!?!?!!!!).

But for DS2 is has to be a full sized one.....bloody hell, thought I had cracked it by not using a dummy with DS2 but alas no!

My Ds is four and for bed he must have:

Blankie (blue fleece baby blanket)
Teddy
Raffy (toy giraffe)
And as many dummies as he can find (one for sucking, the others for fiddling with) BTW, he also like to find the 'cold' dummy.

I gave both my two "shushies" which is what called them when I was small. Although I forgot they were muslins (I didn't have any) so I used flannelet pram sheets instead. dd was never that keen and moved on to a whole bundle of soft toys, but ds at 10 still likes to have one to relax (he is slightly overactive and keeping still is a difficulty for him). For him it was always about which one was soft - no "roughy shushies" he used to say when small, and also they have to be fairly stinky and grey for him to be properly happy, which I think is the smell aspect. He sort of snuffles into the label whilst moving the next bit of material and sucking his thumb. On the positive side he only sucks his thumb with the shushie, so we can keep it to a fairly short getting to sleep time.

Anyway for the OP, we never worried about it, just put it beside them and basically went away. Although thinking about it we used the pram sheets to swaddle ds when tiny (until he found his thumb).

I wouldn't worry at all honestly, try holding one tight against your mouth and nose you will find you can breathe fine.

I wouldn't worry about it. One of my DT's had 3 blankets, called 'big' 'huge' and 'little' (huge was smaller than big!) for years. The other DT had an old pair of her own pyjamas, called 'trousers' and 'ones'. These went around everywhere with us for years. I had nightmares in the supermarket trying to keep track of all these things. They went to KG with them when they first started. They had them all in bed with them every night without mishap.

They all 'died' a couple of years ago (blankies all became jumbled up in one big ball of wool). Recently one of them has found another old pyjama top and has started having that in bed with her again - she's 9!
