Board games for 4/5 year old? Recommendations please!

Starting to think about christmas pressies as have been asked by GPs what DSs would like.

Thought a game or two would be good for DS1, who's 4. He enjoys things like picture lotto, but I would like to introduce him to the next step in board / competetive games. So far I've thought of

Snakes and Ladders
Guess Who (maybe a bit old?)
Buckaroo (or similar taking turns game)

Any advice on the above or recommendations for others would be much appreciated!

We have the Pingu charades game, my four year old loved it.

Hobnobfanatic · 15/09/2009 10:15

Build a Beetle is a big hit with that agegroup

My lot 5,5 and 4 love S&L, Tummy Ache, Crazy Chefs (both Orchard games all of which are fab)Cariboo and Hullabaloo. They had Junior Monopoly last year and are just getting into it big time (they're nearly 6,6 and 5 now). Lego have just bought out some games, have bought the 2 easy ones for the dtwins 6th bday next week.

Second the Orchard Toys range - has some good junior board games. DD (4) just got Bus Stop and also loved Tummy Ache and Shopping List. Heard junior monopoly is good and thinking of that for dd this Xmas. DD also has Kerplunk but generally does other things with the sticks and marbles

Gulo Gulo is fun, IMO its particularly good for small children playing with adults because there is a strong advantage to having tiny fingers, so as an adult you don't have to 'lose' tactically, you will be hammered quite genuinely nearly every time . (The boardgamegeek site that the link is to has loads of reviews of childrens games btw.)

RosieMBanks · 15/09/2009 11:52

Another vote for games from Orchard Toys - here's the link
Tummy Ache (top favourite), Pop to the Shops, Greedy Gorilla, Wild World Lotto and Walk the Plank have all been excellent buys...the games are educational and great fun.

jelliebelly · 15/09/2009 11:54

Anything from Orchard Toys is great - ds (nearly 4)loves Walk the Plank (and he is not the worlds greatest at sitting still at the best of times!!)

ramonaquimby · 15/09/2009 11:55

was also going to say Orchard Toys games too. there are lots to choose from

alypaly · 15/09/2009 11:58

ink blot is good, and funny for all, as it stretches their imagination and gets then to see pictures in ink blots

MilaMae · 15/09/2009 12:00

Forgot Shopping List-they loved that.

Also forgot Hiss totally fantastic not Orchard but they love it and it's the sort of game they'll love for years. It's American but we got it from a v good games site, came v quickly.

Yup, Orchard Games. Bliddy hate the things, me, but dd (almost 6) still loves them......

We also have ludo, snakes and ladders....I did buy a first scrabble, but tbh, it seems a bit pants.

MilaMae · 15/09/2009 12:03

Amazon sells Hiss.

mrsmcdreamy · 15/09/2009 12:08

Great - thanks all for your suggestions...I will be busy on the internet!

We have a couple of the Orchard Toys games/puzzles for the younger 2/3 year old & they've always gone down well, so I will def check out the next step up in their range.

Cock-a-doodle-Moo is fab!!!
So is hulalbaloo, but that's not a board game. good fun though

Hi, My son is 5 years old. When it was about 2-3 years old, we started playing board games with him. He is very fond of it. At the moment, the most interesting is Lewo Wooden Jenga. If you're wondering, look at board game information.
