10 Months Old and Having Tantrums?!

Is this normal?!

We are coping with it by leaving her to paddy it out on the floor and then when she has calmed down, picking her up, giving her a kiss and saying thank you for calming down. Tantrums are only lasting between 30-60 seconds.

I think it is ds started at 11mnths and his friend (same age) started at 10mnths. Just carry on as you are and don't give in.

(its no wonder i love mn so much, there is ALWAYS a mum out there who is going thru the same thing!) - ds does this from time to time, he just cries and cries if he doesnt get his own way or if you do something he doesnt want you too (i.e.- put his shoe on after he takes it off repeatedly) we just keep at it and sometimes just ignore him when we know he is not hurt or otherwise needing something other than some attention or out of his playpen....

My DS's started at about 8 months, it could have been earlier actually! It started off being about changing or being moved to somewhere like the highchair where he felt restrained... they wore off but he replaced them with tantrums about other things!

Oh yeah - I thought I was going mad when DS2 started at just about 8 months (after he started crawling) - but tantrums they were..........interestingly they 'seem' to be getting better now he's 18 months - unlike his brother who started at at about 16 months and continued full blown until about 3yrs old LOL

My 11 month ds screams and screams to get out of his highchair. As soon as he is down on the ground he is all back to smiles.

my ds does that too, jillyk - but he will usually always sit still for mealtimes (well figuratively speaking!)

ds just had one when dh closed the office door on him and he wanted back in. He howled until I gave him some choc buttons. Why do I prefer the afternoons with just ds and me?? no-one to tease him by letting him into office for a few mins then - phone goes and ds gets turfed out!

it is only when she doesnt get her own way.... for example being put on the floor after being held or into the highchair!

I was just going to post a message about my 10 month old DS who was a complete angel upto about 2/3 weeks ago. He started having little tantrums that have gotten worse and worse. In the past if he woke up at night, a drink of water and a cuddle would always settle him, but now he thrashes and screams and head-slaps until, I pick him up, put the light on and give him a book, then he's all smiles!! If I try and rock him or comfort him, he batters me or himself...I had this for 4 hours last night and was beginning to think "is this normal"?

still love them dearly.... we think we know what the tantrums have been about tho - diagnosed with chest infection today

probably not. the infection probably did add to her being irritable, but i think what she is doing is perfectly normal..(and it can be so frustrating!!) ds takes his one shoe off repeatedly, and there is nothing wrong with the shoe, his sock, his foot, but he will do it over and over again when we are out. it drives me mad, but over and over again i put the shoe back on... how old is your dd?

dd is 10 months - also refuses to keep socks on! am i doing the right thing by letting her paddy it out on the floor?!

You are doing exactly the right thing IMO. Nowadays when dd has a paddy fit (she's 15 mths and has been having them since the age of dot!) i let her thrash it out on the floor. I check she's in a safe spot - i move her if i have to - and calmy but firmly tell her that i don;t like that noise so if she wants to make it she can do it on her own. And i walk away. If she hasn't stopped after about a minute i observe from a distance. But she usually does and is all giggles again trying to find me!!

yep, sounds exactly like what im doing with jess. She is a happy girl most of the time but once or twice during the day, we have to let her calm down.

I know she is too young to understand what im doing, but i hope she gets the message that if she is screaming on the floor she doesnt get attention.

she will eventually get the message, it may take awhile though. i know ds knows i'm serious when i tell him 'no' when he is fiddling with his shoe, then he kicks at me with the other foot when i put the shoe back on!! its hard to perservere, but in the long run, it'll be worth it !!

i guess no one told us there'd be days like this!! all we gotta do is grin and do our best to bear it!! =)

as usual another MN'er who is always right - why do i feel like the worst mummy at the moment?! probably pg hormones but feel as if everything im doing is wrong!

ohhhhhhhhh nooooo!!! you're not the worst mommy !!! goodness knows i was giving in to my son weeks, ok MONTHS before i knew, i felt like i was at his beck and call and only NOW am i realising this was wrong. and i'm having to work at attempting to correct behaviour i, no doubt, helped to instill(sp?)

might be hormones too! or just a really stressed out day.. if your dd is sleeping now, jessicasmummy, maybe take some time out for a nice shower or bath if you can?

i intend to have a nice bath later- a bit early for me now, would onyl end up falling asleep and missing the FANTASTIC big brother!!!

Boring cuddle at this age, after all how else can they communicate (I am presuming any language is limited to "quack quack" etc). A boring cuddle is no attention, no soothing noises, but a great big bear hug. Then when your child is calm you let them choose when to break the cuddle and choose their next activity.

How would you feel if something awful had happened and your dp just said "no I'm going to leave you to cry and only speak to you when you can hide your emotion and act like an adult"? Whats wrong with a hug and acknowledging the emotion (it makes you mad when I put on your socks doesn't it?). You still put the socks on by the way.

good point, bobbybob... i always try to remember to reassure ds when he is crying to be out of his cot or playpen ..(well, and at other times too!) ahhh long day for me here!!
