PLease help..feel like I'm at the end of my tether...any tips for keeping them in bed?

My son is 27 months and we moved him into a bed last week after he climbed out of his cot. The first couple of nights were fine but since then he will not stay in bed. He has ripped his books and thrown toys. We tried ignoring and he emptied the chest of drawers and pulled the bookcase onto himself. He screams for me and cries. No previous sleep problems really. Shall I empty the room of furniture? I am worried that he will hurt himself. Any advice gratefully recieved.

He also stripped his bed, pulled the matress off and removed the slats.

I would consider telling him that after bedtime the toys stay away, and if not they'll be removed until he shows that he can go to bed nicely.

I have taken them away already. I would 't eben mind if he played but he seems hell bent on destruction
