ds still not walking.... now at 21 mos.

I'm really getting worried about him, especially now it's warm & we're in parks or gardens. Ped says he's stubborn; nothing physically wrong. But it's driving me mad. Anyone else had this problem? At what point do we "do something" & what might that be?

Does he stand up? Cruise? Is he big and heavy for his age?

DD2 didn't walk until 19 months and I know quite a few are later than that - it is very unusual but not that extreme...biggest problem is for the poor mum having to carry a huge child around.

My dd didn't walk until she was 22 months. She was referred and found to have weak ligaments in her ankles and knees. She is now 2.6 years and is running and climbing. You say you have seen a specialist so hopefully it is just a matter of time

he pulls himself up, cruises but if you pull him up to walk, he lets his knees buckle. little pill! he's quite slim so not a weight problem. very strong willed but surely he should have realised by now that walking is to his advantage?

Sansouci, a friend of mines ds didn't take his first steps until he was just over 2 years old. There was nothing physically wrong he just wasn't inclined too but she was very worried. He is now 4 and never stops running around the place. Next came her ds2 who took his first step at 23 months and is also now, at 2.5, extremely active.
Her sister had a ds who is now 20 months and is crawling and has never stood or walked. I think that late walking is something in their family genes definately not something that has held the children back in any way.
I'm sure that one day when he decides the time is right he'll get up and go and then there'll be no stopping him.

I did not walk until I was 2!! I was quite a fat baby (11lb born and I kept eating!!) and was very delayed in walking... would say I am still not the most athletic person in the world but don't blame that on my childhood -- just pure laziness now!!

Ah - he's probably tried walking (when you weren't looking) and found it wobbly and scary and not nearly as good as scuttling!

Neither of the boys I talked about were big or heavy, in fact they were all quite slightly built babies and are now extremely skinny little boys.

hmmm, yes i have been wondering if he's scared. he's def frustrated... screams his lungs out if i go out of sight or if he doesn't get what he wants when he wants it. a bit like dh

I used to childmind for a little boy, he used to bum shuffle very efficiently until he was just over 2, then he just got up and walked one day.

According to my mum i was a big fat bum shuffler and i didn't walk until i was 2. Apparently they had to put sweets around the furniture to tempt me into cruising, this is a trick that still works on me now.

sansouci other milestones at his age would be things like pointing to show you things that interest him, beginnings of imaginary play (only very simple at this stage- tea parties, pretending to give baby a bottle etc), understanding simple commands- "get your coat", nothing more complex than that- errrm that's about it I think.

My DD didn't walk until she was 19 months and I was getting a bit anxious, esp as DS hadn't walked until 16 mos and I thought that was late, then put it down to his ASD and lack of interest in getting to things. So I assumed she'd be quicker or there would be something "wrong" with her.... they were just late walkers. I would be worried about it though but not sure there's much you can do other than having seen someone already.....

My dd didn't walk until 21 months. She is 27 months old now and still seems to have problems with her balance - she can't walk up or downstairs unless she holds on to the wall and my hand and also finds steps difficult.

She has just learnt to kick a ball though and can run, but falls over a lot. I'm not sure whether I should seem my GP, or whether she is just unsteady because she has only been walking for 6 months.

BTW, her language skills are very good and she has always been a very clear talker.
