nothing is good enough for him. if i say it's a lovely day, he'll say 'no it's not'

everything is so miserable, he seems to enjoy making people fed up with him.

going away soon and want him to make friends for a week or so. he's just such a grump i don't think people will be drawn to him

How old is he? Have you asked him what will make him happy trying to get him to fix his own bad mood?

he doesn't know himself, he seems naturally angry

No advice, but sympathy, I have one like that. If you ask him what he liked best about something he'll tell you the one thing he hated.

I try to ignore the comments and not take it personally, but it's so wearing. I do occasionally lose perspective and get so fed up I give the speech about how I'm trying to do nice things for him and he has to choose if he's going to enjoy them etc etc...

Actually one thing I do find helpful is to not ask questions where negative answers are possible, e.g. "did you enjoy that?" - just keep the show on the road.
