suggestions please for ways to discourage ds from shouting

Ds (3.3) has recently become really shouty. eg today his grandparents popped in and ds shouted "I don't want nanny and grandad. not you nanny!" I told him that we don't speak rudely to nanny and suggested he play in another room. I try not to shout myself (but do every now and then when the kids are driving me nuts) and I think that if I can speak to him calmly and peacefully that will help. Dh can be a bit shouty but is also trying hard to avoid it. Other suggestions gratefully received.
p.s trying to avoid punishment type ways of dealing with this as we are also dealing with throwing, tantrums etc at the moment.

Oh my word, my DS hit this age and suddenly the volume got stuck on max. It's impossible to keep him quiet. I realised that I shout quite a lot too. Not in anger (usually) but more in a One Man and his Dog kind of way.

Not sure what to suggest really but will watch with interest.

Hiya, any suggestions gratefully received. I can't help as am in the same boat - my DS1, age 5.6 just will not stop talking, shouting, screeching and going in strops. He's driving me crazy and making my ears bleed. I know it's because he's excited and so full of energy and ideas that he can't suppress it but it's just making me nuts. I am a quiet person myself and tend to keep things to myself - DS1 clearly the opposite type, bless him. I've tried explaining things to him but it's like talking to a brick wall - he just doesn't retain information either. He's so loveable and sweet and I hate to "crush" him. Help! And OP, my DS started this when he was about 4 so maybe you're on the same path. Sorry to crash.

Exactly it is a volume issue all day with occasional max volume moments. I also tried today, "I can't hear you properly when you shout at me" which made him rephrase more quietly but was still shouty moments later

dd3 (4.5) is very loud too we've tried to get her to understand that when we're inside she needs to use her indoor voice, but to be honest it's not been terribly sucessful!

I'm hoping (praying!) she grows out of it....

Well thats what I do when dd whines - except its "I don't understand whine-language"....sometimes works

good idea, I never really whisper with him. Will try tomorrow
