4 month old son cries hysterically if anyone but me or his dad hold him

help!! not sure what to do. we are trying to gradually build his confidence and not reinforce this fear. have started to just sit very close by so he can see i'm right there. he is gradually getting better with my sister and his grandmothers, but still cries after a few minutes. if someone tries to take him into another room he is hysterical. really want to nip this in the bud while he's still little but not sure how.

my ds went through his phase quite common i just made sure he was held by others still and then just took him back if got too upset

its not something you can nip in the bud im afraid and you will find probably a she gets older will go through another clingy phase they are just phases and do pass perfectly normal

You don't need to nip it in the bud! It is just a normal phase. As new borns they go to anyone. He can now differentiate and prefers the people he knows. The next stage is to differentiate other special people.The next stage is to think that people he does't know may be fun. Don't worry.

He's 4 months old! If he wants you to hold him then hold him.

I'd just go with what he wants at the moment to be honest, I think if he learns that Mum/Dad takes him right back when he's upset it will make him more secure and in the long run happier to play with other people. He's very little now, if he's clingy, let him be clingy for a bit, he will come out of it. Mine did anyway! Good luck!

My daughter is now 14 months old and she has always been a clingy baby compared (I know you shouldn't compare!) to friends. I honestly think its just the baby's personality and also a normal phase of development for all children to a greater or lesser extent. My daughter had periods of not wanting me to leave her side and other times when she's been quite happy to go exploring. She still has good days and bad days and isn't keen on strangers (or our friends who she doesn't know very well). Don't worry, he'll go to grandparents and aunts etc as he gets older and realises that you do come back. Think of it in a positive way - he loves his Mum and he feels safe when he's with you!
