At what age did your toddler start pointing and asking "whats that" over and over... and over again?

Hm DS is 18 months now and it's been going on for probably a month or two, so around 16-17 months? We get it all the time - "waddat? waddat?". Now that he knows what a lot of the basic things are (car, tree, shoe...) he has moved into more detail - now when he sees a car he wants to know what the indicator/keyhole/dashboard etc etc is!

My friend's little girl started pointing at things and wanting to know what they were REALLY early, before 12 months (though she didn't ask out loud); but she is very ahead on communication, they do a lot of baby signing and she knows loads of signs already.

EyeballsandherSunburntNorks · 17/06/2009 11:09

About 14 months here although she seems to have been doing it forever

claireybee · 17/06/2009 11:23

DS started with "dat?" at about 10/11 months I think. Now he only points to things he knows the name of

Sheeta · 17/06/2009 11:26

about 15-16 months I think. he's coming up to 19mo now, and it's beginnging to drive me crazy

'wassat?'

over and over and over and over and over.

PlumBumMum · 17/06/2009 11:28

As RinityThino when they discover how to say WHY

cinnamon81 · 17/06/2009 11:30

DD is nearly 12 months and been doing it for e few weeks. "sssthat?" whilst pointing. Still cute at the minute haven't got to the stage where it's annoying yet!

EyeballsandherSunburntNorks · 17/06/2009 11:31

Aww, DD says 'dat' as well.

LittleMammaTo2 · 17/06/2009 11:36

Again, around 12 months. DD is now 27 months we still get "what's this/that" but now also get "what mummy/daddy/lady etc doing" about a million times per day. Would love on/off switch just for 10 mins every now and then

HensMum · 17/06/2009 11:43

Not yet (at 20 months), should I be worried?! If he wants something he points and says his name, or please, or the name of the object.

Sheeta · 17/06/2009 13:36

HM - he may have bypassed it, if he's naming objects already then I wouldn't worry.

HaventSleptForAYear · 17/06/2009 13:39

DS2 is 2.5 and is doing it non-stop at the moment (although he says "quoi ça?").

Can't remember when he started.

VeraChuckandDave · 17/06/2009 13:45

16mo points and says 'that' or 'look, look' (albeit in a babyish babble sort of way). Has done so for a few months.

bellygot2go · 17/06/2009 13:47

for as long as i can remember! So probably soon after he learnt to take. At 3 he is still doing it but i also get wheres nanny, daddy, tesco, our house, nursery etc etc, where does daddy, nanny, etc work. dont have why yet but am dreading!

bellygot2go · 17/06/2009 13:49

i mean talk not take obviously!

MegSophandEmma · 17/06/2009 13:54

No need to worry Hensmum. DD3 is 24 months and has never asked "whats that?" She just waits untill she has heard the name of an object mentioned a few times and spouts the word out when we least expect it. Some littles do just bypass certain milestones and crack on with the next lol.

notevenamousie · 17/06/2009 14:46

I think some of them bypass some of the phrases too. My dd still loves "what's that" at 2.6 but "what do you think it is, dd?" now works whereas it never used to.

HensMum · 17/06/2009 14:50

DS has bypassed an annoying phase?! Yay!

His speech is very good (I think). Large vocabulary and is just starting to combine words. I just get "Hennie's? Hennie's? peese, peese, peese, peeeeeese. Hennie's?!" all day long instead!

ThePhantomPlopper · 17/06/2009 17:49

My DS bypassed it, so DD starting at 14mo came as a shock, she hasn't stopped for 2 months and the tantrums she has if I don't respond EVERY SINGLE TIME are shocking!

Ds can talk A LOT but likes asking 'who's that' over and over...it seems to have nothing to do with needing to know anything as often he's asking about things/pictures of people he already knows...although he does point at strangers and ask me it too,he believes I know everyone on the planet! (he's just reached 17 mo,this has been going on for a while tho)

helpYOUiWILL · 22/06/2009 20:02

ds1 never did it or ask "why", ds2 doesnt stop!!

Jennypane · 01/12/2022 20:45

My grand-baby at 12 months. She’s 15 now. When she was 12 months she said “momma what’s that”. She says about 50 words
