Not rolling/crawling etc

I'm probably over-worried and seeing other babies J's age (10mths) does not help... J never liked being on his tummy so I gave up trying to put him on his front (maybe I should have tried earlier?). He's just started sitting up on his own but still hates being on his tummy even though he has been seeing a physio for a few weeks. He may go straight to walking when he's ready but his legs still bend up underneath when I hold him upright with his feet on the floor.
I just want some reassurance that yes, J maybe behind on this but he's not the only one. He's fine on all the other development things like language, fine motor abilities etc. Am I being too pushy?

Just sounds a tad lazy to me.

My cousin's daughter was exactly like that at 12m. I found it very alarming that, not only did she make no attempt to stand, but, when you lifted her up, her legs remained splayed out and bent at the knees as if she was still sitting. She's a third child, and her dad's sister has another four children, and none of the family seemed at all concerned - and as I was meeting her for the first time, and didn't know the background I zipped my lip. She never crawled, but eventually bum-shuffled for a short while (month or two?) before walking - I don't recall exactly when she started walking, but it was before 18m.

So it sounds like your ds is just at one end of the 'normal' spectrum, especially if he's fine on other developmental things.

Have you tried rolling things on the floor - balls with bells on them, wind-up toys, cars, empty drinks bottles with colourful beans or pasta in them, etc?

Both my ds & dd got moving "late" - ds (now 4) crawled at 11 months & walked on his own at 18 months (after a few months of pushing a toy buggy around) and dd (now 14 months) shuffled at 12 months and has just started pulling up in the last few days. For ages her legs wouldn't weight bear and she wasn't interested on being on her front either, and still isn't as she bumshuffles. However she's caught up fast and is already attacking her big brother!

And it did mean I didn't have to childproof the house as soon as my friends!

Thanks, its' nice to know he's not the only "latecomer". He's getting better day by day, seems that once he realises he can do something new he has a spurt and does lots of new things at once. I'll try the rolling toys - maybe get some now ones too. It will be a shock when he does start moving as I am used to him being in the same place as I left him when I go out of the room.

Good news. J's come on so far! He's started to stand and learning to balance with my help. Still does not like being onhis tummy and no crawling but lots of rolling and trying to climb all over me and D.

He sounds healthy and fun! How old now about a year? I always say they all come on at own rate and level out around 3 to 4

My 10 month old dd will never crawl. She hates being on her front, and screams if I try it (normally very good baby.) Pretty sure she'll go straight to walking. I just don't think she's particularly keen to crawl, and puts all her energies into playing with her toys and working out the world rather than crawling, so wouldn't worry!

don't worry. if he's up to speed in all other areas then its unlikely there's a problem. my cousin's daughter NEVER rolled over as such. She went straight from sitting to crawling at about 11 months, and never stood up alone until she started walking (she mainly sat but sometimes wobbled along holding onto table and chair if you stood her up. )Now she is 14 months and running around. This child was also verbal from an early age. Sometimes if a child is 'advanced' in some areas, they will be slower in others.
You can count on the fact that he will be walking before he is two.

i used to look afte a little girl who HATED being on her tummy... she just wantd to sit up all the time. She eventually bum-shuffled and then walked. So, don't worry... he'll do it when he's good and ready!

Dont think Andi is worried now. She wanted to share the achievment of her little one..Well done!!!!

i am v late to this thread but i have also been worried about dd who does not bear weight on legs at all; she is nine months old now and when i raise her up she sits like she is in the lotus position in the air. The nursery says this is common but I can't believe there is any muscle in her legs. She doesn't roll either, tho she is quite a good sitter now. The health visitor gets me alarmed, but this thread has calmed me down. Like you AndiM, my dd loathes being on her tummy and I wish now I had started that v early on. My consolation is she babbles away and is generally happy, tho beginning to get a bit bored. I put toys out of her reach to encourage her to move, but she either gets very frustrated or just looks at them.

think how much muscle tone it must need to keep legs up when in mis air! Dont think i could do that. surely they would flop if she had no/weak muscle! Health visitors go by average guide lines...who wants an average baby!!! If she is sitting and showing an interest let her get on with it. My ds is not sitting properly yet and will be 10 months at the end of the month! he rolls and moves somehow..not a crawl and not very fast!

good point. what was that political party called where they leapt around in the lotus position. Maybe dd is going to be one of those ;)

DS1 was still sat there rather like a dumpling (IMO) at 11 months old. He then (slowly) started crusing furniture (I had to stand him up to hold onto it htought as he couldn't pull himself up . At about 14 months he started crawling (sort of - still looks rather 'odd' while crawling round with his little brother - definitley not a 'natural' crawler LOL) and he didn't walk until 18 months,

Ds didn't crawl until a year and walked at 16 months. He is now totally normal at nearly 2 and a half, climbing to the top of the climbing frame at the park, running everywhere and I haven't taken the buggy out in months. Please be reassured that J is in good company.

There's nothing quite like Mumsnet comfort!! My DD is 6 months, and the only on ef her group not to be bearing weight on her legs or rolling over, but I'm not worried anymore having read through all the other tales. I tried - or at least DH did - from an early age to put her on her tummy but she hated it from the start, and still does. I love the "lotus" position description , which DD does to a tee. They MUST all go at their own rates - she's no 2 of 8 babies to have teeth!!

happydog, you are right. My dd has teeth too - five of them already (she has just turned nine months). perhaps they are so busy with the discomfort of teething that they think 'hey, crawling/cruising can wait. I have a mouth full of enamel to be getting on with'
