3 millionth potty training attempt - he's attempting to run towards potty while weeing, tell me he's going to "get it" this time please...

day 1 of our zillionth attempt (he's 3.1 and has been back in pull ups for 2 months since our last failed attempt). He hasn't managed to get a wee in the potty today but for the first time seems to want to do it. Three times this afternoon he ran yelling "weeeeeeeeee" in the direction of the potty. Please please tell me this means he's going to get it this time

he will do it when he ready. My ds has been like this but for past 2 weeks he has really shown interest for MOST of day. Please stop with the pull ups as nappies they confuse children easily most of my mindees have struggled with them too. If you are going to use pull ups maybe try what we are doing, ds2 runs round in pants all day indoors which are big boy pants that he says "No wee wee in pants" about when he starts getting tired/deeply engrossed we put a bob the builder pull up on him and tell him how sad bob will be if he gets wet this works 95% of the time went 7 hours with dry pull up the other day as we were driving for 2 hours in morning and again in afternoon and just about made drive before we got the "weeeee"

Why's he not doing it - is it that he doesn't get it, or is he just not bothered?

Initially I thought it was because he wasn't bothered so offered prizes which got steadily more ott until I realised he just couldn't do it (he was so desperate to win Sir Handel but still didn't make any difference). He isn't motivated by stickers, choc buttons, prizes etc nor by being a big boy and isn't at all bothered by getting wet pants etc. Today he's shown little interest again despite me praising like a loon etc etc. He has done 4 wees in the potty and the tiniest bit of poo but that was at my instigation not his. am despondant again...

Well four wees in the potty's pretty good, even if it is just because you've put him there. But if you think he can't do it/ isn't ready yet then I'd say leave it another few months. Being over 3 and still not in pants isn't at all unheard of, especially in boys.

I want to try for a whole week as friends have reported clueless dc's on days 1 and 2 but fairly ok by end of a week. Part of my problem is my own competitive mum-ness, I don't like being the only one I know with a 3 yr old who isn't trained. I know that's ridiculous and doesn't help poor ds get it any quicker

would love him to be all excited and keen to do it. Will have to get on with it and hope for some inclining of interest soon

Don't listen to other mums.
I was surrounded by them telling me that little Indiana had just started using the toilet all by herself at the age of two.
I am sure my tension communicated itself to DD1 and we had a hellish time.
However as me old mum used to tell me- you don't often hear of DCs in nappies at 6,7,8 etc.
Take heart! And try and relax.

My DS is 3 and not potty trained! You're not alone. He just does not seem ready to me so I'm going to leave it a bit longer. My DD got the hang of it at around 2.5 in 3 days and has never had an accident since. I totally believe in waiting....and waiting...and waiting til they're ready and it will be a breeze. (I hope ).

started our second attempt with training when ds was nearly 3.5. one month in and we now have totally dry days. we started by getting him to sit on the potty for long stretches while we read him books or watched tv.

then once he'd got the hang of weeing we moved to bribes - if you can do a wee wee first i'll read you this book etc.

we still have to remind ds and he rarely asks to go but i feel we're making progress.

lots of praise, washing and patience on your behalf. then if and only if they want to do it you'll get there.

competitive mum stuff sucks

Tom is the same age as OPs DS. He freaks out if you try and get him to sit on a potty, so invested in a potty chair (which he still won't sit on) but he does pee in it standing up. Unfortunately, he does the same thing when he poos, so that ends up on the floor! I have seats for the toilet as well. I don't know whether to try him on them or to see if he can stand up at the toilet and pee. Don't think the step stool is high enough. It doesn't help that DP is leaving it all up to me either .

What about saying for every wee in the potty he can have a choc button and 2 for every poo? I know it's bribery but perhaps it might help him want to go before he actually needs to go as it were and then wants he's got the hang of weeing on demand it might make it all much easier for him to learn his signals?
