Small fontanelle at nearly 7 wks - should I be worried?

DS just had 6 wk check and we were told that they want to check him again in 2 weeks, mainly because he has a small fontanelle. He also didn't pull his head up that well, but I'm sure that was because he was very sleepy as he always seems to have very good neck/head control. Can anyone shed any light on what the fontanelle problem may be, or why/whether I need to worry? The doctor did the normal thing of putting the seed of worry in my head, and then refused to explain what it all meant in case it worried me!!!!

I think if it was something to worry about they would have made an appointment for the paeds there and then. IME the medical profession do take small babies very seriously and always err on the side of caution rather than use the wait and see approach.
It may just be that the fontanelle is closing early which I believe is quite common. If you are concerned, perhaps go back slightly before the two weeks are up and make sure you ask lots of questions - they cannot lie to you.

Thanks Blondissimo. I spoke to the Health visitor afterwards and it turned out she had flagged up with the doctor that DS's head circumference hadn't grown as they would like, and that's why they were particularly scrutinising his head. Head measured 36cm at birth, apparently 38.5cm at 2 weeks and then 38cm at 7 wks!!! I can't help but think the measurement at 2 weeks must have been wrong. When I checked back on my DD's measurements, her head was 33cm at birth and 34cm at 6 wk check. She never had a measurement at 2 weeks. It's all a bit worrying but am trying to stay positive and am hoping it is all down to a measurement mistake. When the HV checked DS's fontanelle yesterday afternoon she didn't seem to think it was that small.
