What words can your 15 month old say?

When do babies usually start to talk?

Ds2 is almost 15 months and can say a handful of words. I'm gobsmacked and think he's an utter genius as DS1 didnt start saying anything until at least 18 months (have a feeling DS1 may be slow though rather than DS2 a genius lol)

He can say
Boo
Bird
Bye
Hot
That
Ta (despite me never saying it to him and only ever saying thank you!)

He makes no attempt to say Mummy or daddy at all!

How does this compare with others?

My ds is a bit older (19 months) but he's been speaking for quite a while and IIRC he's been saying the following for quite a while...

mummy
daddy
bus
car
dog dog (comes out as gogog)
duck duck
that
there
bird (sounds very similar to his version of bus)

hf128219 · 08/05/2009 09:01

Our dd (15 months) stunned us the other day and said 'Shut the f'ing door'.

HeadFairy · 08/05/2009 09:02

oh and now he's learning new words every day. I had to laugh yesterday when I called out to dh using his name, and ds then started calling him using his name in exactly the same tone of voice (ie slightly hacked off and urgent )

He's started saying two word sentences now...

Bye bye daddy
bye bye dog dog
I know
two numners (dummies)
look bus.

HeadFairy · 08/05/2009 09:02

and hf!!!

cuntish · 08/05/2009 09:04

hf - really? wow thats impressive, my 3 year old hasnt mastered that one yet

My DD is nearly 14 months and says:

Mum
Daddy
Boo
Ta
That
Did (which means dummy)
Juju (my little brothers name - Joe - which she usually shouts at the top of her voice whilst bossing him around!)

My Mum is always saying that when I was her age I could speak in full sentences so she seems to think DD is a bit slow but I think it's about right for her age.

hf128219 · 08/05/2009 09:18

Only joking! But it was my brother in law's first words - they used to live in a very cold farmhouse!

ohdearwhatamess · 08/05/2009 09:20

ds2 14mo shouts talks a lot, but very little of it sounds like proper words to me. Ones that stand out are

Dada
Mama
Yeddie (= Freddie, dog - also ds1's first word and that of my various nieces and nephews )
Susie (also a dog)
bye-bye (with waving)

julietbat · 08/05/2009 10:07

Are you sure he's saying ta? My dd says ka for thank you and for a long time we thought she was saying ta too and were quite bewildered (and put out!) since we only say thank you to her.

babyOcho · 08/05/2009 13:18

DD is 14 months today and can say

bird
daddy
milk
dog
cat
no
hi
hello
bye

DP and I are getting worried about our potty mouths and have started a swear jar. During breakfast this morning, we decided that £1 per word was too much, as he already owed £10! We are dropping it to 10p and going to call it the swear bucket!

ThePhantomPlopper · 08/05/2009 13:23

DD is 14mo and can say:

Granddad.
Daddy.
Mama.
Bye.
Hiya.
Ta.
Boo.
Dog.
Cat.
Granny.

She chatters away all the time but they are the only recognisable words so far.

DS spoke much later.

fedup1981 · 08/05/2009 13:23

My 21 month old says nothing.

damnitdamnit · 08/05/2009 13:50

my dd 20mo does not really talk, she can only say

dada - still no sign of mummy or similar
yes - really clear (but just shakes her head for no)
i see - if you ask her where something is she will point and say i see

at what age should you start to worry that they do not say enough?

your DS2 does sound like a genius to me

LostGirl · 08/05/2009 14:05

DD2 is 16 months and probably has vocab of about 50 words and is putting them together and starting to ask what? and where?

DD1 however did not say anything until just before she turned 2. We approached HV when she was nearly 3 as we were still concerned it was not developing as it should and by the time she started school she was talking just like her peers. I think we left it a bit too long to ask for her to be referred as I undersestimated the length of time that it would take to get an initial appointment and then another wait for actual therapy sessions.

I have a list of what DD (20 months) said at 16 months. It reads

hello
thank you
bye bye
that
mum
Dad
nana
Cat
Dog
Shoes (she's obsessed with shoes!)
What (as in what that?)
no
one
two
three
juice
cheese
all done
plus a whole host of animal noises (duck, cat, lion, guinea pig)

She did seem to say more at that age than her friends of the same age and her language is still developing well 4 months later.

Supercherry · 08/05/2009 16:39

Car
Ball
Dat (that)
Momomomomom- only when upset
Daddy
Ta (I always say thank you but his nan and everyone else says ta)
Belly (I'm pregnant)
Gada (dog)

Lots of gobbledy gook- love it

elliepac · 08/05/2009 18:56

Mama
Dada
'arlie (for big brother)
Ta
tat (cat)
na na (night night)

and that's about it

the rest of it undecipherable babble yet very cute!

LittleMonkeysMummy · 08/05/2009 19:37

My DD (14 m) says
Dada
Mama - not as often as Dada
cat - now also means dog, rabbit, actually any 4 legged animal
ta
ca (car)
gaga - grandma and grandpa
off
yes
this - points at everything and says this almost like she's asking what's this?
baba - bye bye

and LOADS of incoherent babbling!

DT2 Jack says mumma when screaming and thats about it though he is now able to sign bath, juice, milk and night night. They are just coming on 16 mths.

silkcushion · 08/05/2009 20:14

think dd 18mo was quite an early talker. Was saying
hiya
what's that? (and pointing)
very clearly before she was 1.

Now has a vocab of about 40 words (although cows are called moos) but she walked later than all her friends.

Am shocked now at how the word mummy can be made to mean so many different things depending on what's going on and how she chooses to whine say it

CarGirl · 08/05/2009 20:18

I've had extremes, my eldest was talking in fluent 10+ word sentences by 18 months and probably 40 words at 14 months!!!!! However 2 of my younger ones have needed speech therapy. My youngest didn't say her first word "Abi" until probably 16 months and not a lot else for a long time.

silkcushion · 08/05/2009 20:20

blimey cargirl 10 word sentences at 18months! Well I'll need to readjust my thoughts of dd being a genius then
