2 yo needs long nap 3 or 4 hours after getting up - is this normal?

ds will be 2 on Friday. For ages he's been having one daytime nap, usually after lunch, for anything from 45 mins to 2 hours. He goes to bed around 7, is always asleep by 7.30pm and wakes around 6 /6.30.

For the last 3 weeks he has been exhausted after being up for about 4 hours and at that point has his day time nap, sometimes a very deep sleep for about 2 hours. Unless he has a very short nap, this will be his only daytime sleep, he can then keep going very easily until early evening.

Today he woke at 6.30am and is now (9.45am) asleep again having been in a terrible teary state, obviously very tired. This seems odd to me, surely he should be able to keep going for longer? Obvious solution would be to get him to have a longer night time sleep but I have no idea how to make him sleep for an extra hour in the mornings, he's raring to go at 6.30.

Any advice / experience please?

Sounds fine. Kids are different and my dd who's just 3 sometimes needs a daytime nap if she gets up with ds at 5.30 . She often had a mid-morning nap at 2 iirc.

No advice but my 2.3yr old is the same! She's regularly clocking up 3hr naps too. Although last night I popped up to see her about an hour and a half after she'd been put to bed and she was still lying there wide awake (very still, very quiet but obviously deep in own thoughts because she didn't half jump when she noticed me!). If she's been doing that regularly it might explain her giant naps - any chance yours is doing the same?

yours should be "your DS". Can you tell DD2 (9mths) had a 2 hour party in the middle of the night last night?

thanks for reassurance, couldn't believe this morning when he went off to sleep barely 3 hours after waking up. He sleeps really well during the night (though yes could be awake contemplating on life without me knowing about it!).

think it's worrying me as I need to choose between two nursery schools, both lovely and only difference is one has morning sessions and one has afternoon sessions and I don't know which to go for (and I have to commit asap or I will lose the place).

maybe having a growth spurt. If he is tired let him sleep.

as for the nursery sessions - morning would have suited mine - they conked out in the afternoons often - but sounds like for your DS afternoon would be better.

My ds is like this too. He has a nap mid-am and then that's it for the day. - However he goes to Nursery 3 days/week - and on these days only has after lunch nap with the other children. Because there is enough to distract him in mornings he doesn't get as grumpy as at home when tired, and then they have an early lunch anyway. From my experience just go for the nursery you prefer!
