This is driving us mad, every time our ds sees out dd getting something, he crys and whines. We've tried reasoning with him. Last weekend he got football boots, track suit bottoms and she didn't make a fuss. Is this a boy thing, or just a phase? Is this common?
His teachers at school have commented that he starts to cry if it's not his turn on the computer etc.

Any thoughts? Apart from jealousy!

You can't reason with a 5 yo if they don't want to be reasonable. A simple explanation told once should suffice and then ignore him.

He only carries on whingeing and whining because he's learnt he gets sympathetic attention from you. Do not put up with it. But don't get angry either. Keep reasonable but say if he carries on making noises that hurt your ears he'll have to go out of the room you're in, and carry out the threat.

He'll soon learn that it's not getting him anywhere.

You could also have a sticker chart so that he gets one for being kind to/happy for his sister tc. Then if he gets 20 stickers he gets a little treat from his sister.

Good luck!
