Do your children understand that the person on the other end of the phone can't see them?

My dd (4 in June) still hasn't got that the person she is talking to can't see her! It is funny to see her nodding away in response to questions. She was showing her Auntie her new dress over the phone today

My 5 year old dd still nods and points to things when she is talking to someone on the phone.

I sometimes have to remind her that people can't see her shaking or nodding her head as she does it instead of answering them.

I have to tell dd to say yes instead of nodding. And she does that time, but a minute later she has forgotten!

I actually asked dd if Auntie can see her when she is on the phone. She said yes. I then asked her if she could see her Auntie "erm, no". So I asked her again if her auntie could see her and she said yes, and something about her being able to see through the phone like a screen!

I wonder if it is just our girls who do this - there must be others!

Dd used to point, but i said "Grandma can't see" so now she holds the phone out at whatever it is she wants her to see. It's very funny.

Ds who's 2 and a bit has just started talking to the grandparents. I have to sit with him and tell him to say yes every time he nods. Mum said she'll stop asking the closed questions!

Dd is almost 8 and only started talking on the phone in the last year, so knew they couldn't see her. Prior to that she was scared of the phone and refused point blank to answer it. Now if I'm busy but she's free, we let the answer phone pick it up and if its someone she knows she'll pick up.
I know thats not what you asked but hey I got sidetracked!

It would be interesting to see what the age is when kids generally get it...

Ds is almost 6, and I am pretty sure he knows

ds1 age 7 knows very well that he cant be seen when talking on the phone, but still nods when talking, ds2 age 22 months will talk , but doesnt yet really understand where the voice at the other end is.

ds (3) gets it, as he is going through a shy phase of hiding his eyes when meeting most people, but he never does that on the phone, just demands to talk. He doesnt care if it's grandma or my solicitor

Oh, and sometimes i nod when talking on the phone so maybe i still dont get it lol!

I think Gs must have been Italian or something in a previous life.. he's almost 2 1/2 and babbles away on the phone to people - interspersed with real words, and waves his arms around in madly exageratted gestures - as I remember my italian aunt(step aunt through one of mothers marriages - so no blood link) doing when she lived over here (GS has never met her).

we were driving the other day and called dh on the handsfree phone thingy - dd 2.5 suddenly shouted "oh Daddy look at the beautiful blossom!"
