4 month old- starting to try to sit up

Hi I have a 4 month old DD who when I put her in her bouncy chair moves her head and shoulders forward as if trying to sit up. Is there anything I should be doing to encourage this and/or is there a chair that I can buy that would encourage this? I have been sitting her on the floor with my legs behind her back to support her.

You can sit her up propped up with pillows for a bit if she is happy doing that. I used to play 'Row The Boat' with my DS, sitting him up against some cushions and gently rocking him back and forth holding his arms while singing 'Row the Boat'. I read somewhere that it helps to strengthen their back and neck muscles.

My DD is 22 weeks old and seems to be starting to sit up unaided without me doing any of that , so whether or not the 'practice' works or not, I couldn't tell you!

Thank you very much MrsMattie. People are so helpful on here. I love this site!

We had a Bumbo that was excellent, allowed her sit unsupported whenever and where ever. Your DD sounds like a strong little baby.

Ds was sitting unaided (absolutely no support) at 5mo - at 4mo he really wanted to sit up - his favourite place was sitting on my knee as he had a good view from there. I'm pleased to report that he didn't walk until 14.5mo though - although he was running on day two, so clearly waited until he knew he'd be good at it before trying....
