Could there be a physical cause if it's such a sudden change? Is she otherwise well, no temp etc?
ds's sleep patterns used to go down the toilet just before a growth spurt or before a major milestone, he'd get very unsettled and not sleep well, then suddenly grow an inch/master the new skill and all would be well. is she working up to something do you think?

Perhaps it's just the latest phase, and she's wanting you at the moment. If it were me I'd rule out any physical causes and go with it, it will pass and ime trying to battle against clinginess only makes things worse.
