He's doing this quite a lot at the mo, and the other day he did it in front of the ILs which was fairly embarassing. He gets his willy out and has a fine old time messing about with it; I've just been saying "if you want to do that in your room it's fine but please don't do it in here". But I'm not entirely sure the best way of dealing with it without screwing him up for life, what's the MN verdict?

Just keep explaining that it's fine to do it in private but not in front of other people.

31 months?!?!?!

MP, I know - I just got an email reminding me of his exact age so thought I'd be specific.

You might try moving him to his room when he does it. If that is where you have decided it OK to fiddle, it will take a while to get through to him but eventully hopefully he will take himself to his room.
my 3 yr old is now sometimes taking him self off to bed when its all too much and he wants to chill out and fiddle.

I said to him today to stop it and he said "yes, I'll go to my bedroom and do it, not in the lounge."

Dr Sears reckon kids do it when they're chronically bored, wow, something else that's my fault! Sigh...

i actually did say to my DS1 that if he kept playing with his winkie it would fall off but he looked at me like i was nuts and just laughed so i now just ignore it or try to. I know its the coward's way out but i'm a single mum so have no DP or DH to explain his fascination with winkies
