How do you stop them shouting SHUT UP!

My 'charming' 3 year old has picked this up somewhere and keeps telling us all to shut up. It is driving me mad. I've tried ignoring it, time out and nothing is working.

I need to knock it on the head, he starts pre school in a week!

Well, I think that if you pick one method and stick to it and stay very consistent, it will sink in. With DS, he used to say 'go away' all the time. I never ignored it but said things like' don't say that, it's not nice' bla bla. Then, I started to say to him that every time he'd say that, he would have to stay in the corner for 2 minutes, and we put the timer on the oven so he knows when the 2 minutes is over. EVERY single time he'd say 'go away' I'd take him to the oven, program it to ring after 2 minutes, and put him in the corner. After a day or two he got the message and stopped saying it. I think that consistency is the most important thing for things like that.

I've just started putting him in the other room for 3 minutes when he says it, he seems to be getting it now, hasn't said it half as much this afternoon as he did this morning (tis only 1pm though ).

Hopefully its going to work.

The trick is to be consistent-whichever method you choose, don't get fed up and give in before he does.

Say - you can say 'shut up' but you are absolutely not allowed to say 'pink pigs poo in a pocket' and then throw a pillow at him

.

He hasn't said it all today and only a few times yesterday!
