2.3 yr old playing with his own poo. Yuck. Help!

For the past 3 days my son has put his hands down his nappy after 'using' it and has covered himself in it. The first time it was at night and he obviously didn't want to lie in it so took his nappy off and only woke me at 1am when he had woken himself up wet. (What a joyful experience that was- it was like something out of 'Lord of the Flies', he was a wee shit warrior- covered from head to toe).

It seems to have started a trend and now when he does a poo he doesn't tell me (which he has previously been good at) but tries to take the nappy off or just explores it and comes in the room covered in it.

I'm not worried about it per se, but it is just really horrible. We have some friends coming to visit and my DD's b-day party next week and would be just mortified if he was to exhibit his charming new behaviour to them or at the party.

Anyone been through this or got any ideas? He was doing ok potty training wise but still doesn't have full control/ awareness. I didn't have this with DD who was out of nappies by this stage.

Honestly, it's grossing me out

Help

Have you put a vest on the little darling so he can't get access? The ones with poppers right at the bottom I mean.

My ds did this, he completely covered his room, toys, carpet etc once during naptime. He grew out of it after a few months, but they were very very grim months. Sorry I can't help more! I found he undid anything I tried, including gaffa tape!! (round the nappy, not the child!!)

Hi

you can get those vests that have poppers underneath, M&S do them up to three years old, I got a few packs the other day.

Hope he grows out of this phase soon

Yeah, we've got a 2.2yo who's very creative with his H-Block effects! He started about a month ago - did it several times - but we've fettled him!

I got big popper vests from Mothercare (the boys ones were all sold out in the big sizes but they had identical unisex white ones in big sizes on the girls side) a couple of weeks ago and it's stopped him completely. Touch wood. It seemed to be an 'opportunist' activity. He doesn't seem to be bothered now he's shut out.
