I have been invited by a friend to take our dds swimming. My dd is only ten weeks old (just) - is this too young to go??

It's fine.

I first took ds around 12 weeks. If the water is quite cool then dont stay in long as they do get cold quickly

I would say its ok too.

I always went by the rule of had first set of jabs!

We took our DS at 6 weeks old and have been going regularly ever since (he is 1 tomorrow ). The pool might say that you can't go until she has had all her jabs, but the DoH states that this is not necessary. Given this and the fact that many kids don't have jabs anyway, I figured there was no real reason why DS needed them beforehand.

As Seona says, little babies really don't last long in the water - 10 mins or so. We bought a Konfidence Body Warmer which really helped him last longer - even though his arms and leg were cold, his body stayed lovely and warm. Also, the disposable swim nappies are only for quite big babies (16lb+ I think) so you'll need a washable swim nappy. We found the Kushies swim nappy ideal as it fastens with velcro so is adjustable around the legs to get a snug fit whereas the ones from Mothercare are just one size really.

My big tip is to take two towels with you - one for wrapping round her as soon as you get out of the pool (keep it close by the pool edge) and then another for when you get to the changing rooms so you have something nice and cosy to wrap her in.

It is a lot of fun taking them swimming, even at this age!

That is great - thanks for all the replies!
