16-month-old suddenly crying at bedtime and in night - scared of the dark?

My 16 mo DS has suddenly started needing to be settled off to sleep again having been great at settling himself off. He has always woken in the night - have usually suspected windy tum as usually does a big fart after a while!! But lately he wakes and seems to suddenly start crying and is standing up in his cot waiting for me when I get into his room. I wondered whether he has started to become afraid of the dark, is he too young for this? Just occurred that when he wakes too early i.e 5.30 like he did this morning, he just babbles himself off back to sleep (if I'm lucky!!) whereas when it is dark he seems to need me to go through to him. Any advice greatly appreciated!

can't you get a nightlight/ leave the door ajar and the landing light on?

do you have a night light you can attach to the cot my ds had one that played music also and he knew how to work it if he did wake up

we also had one that you plugged in it has a sensor comes on when dark turns itself off in morning we also found quiet toy at end of cot helped so he could have a bit of a play until able to settle back off again
