Does anyone's 2 year old have an open bite due to using a dummy or thumb sucking?

Bit worried about DS' teeth and am actively trying to stop him from sucking this thumb but it's not going very well

My dd's are older but yes they all do due to dummy/thumb sucking.

nappyaddict · 14/03/2009 19:15

How old were they when it first became apparent or the dentist first mentioned anything?

youngest is currently 3.5 and she already has open bite and she only has dummy for bed.

Most dentist now say it doesn't make a difference - has yours said it's because of his thumb sucking?

Lulumama · 14/03/2009 19:28

DD did, but it closed up within a few weeks off not having her dummy anymore.

i think at the moment, as he is recovering from a nasty illness, you could let him have his comfort sucking for a while longer?

It's very obvious with my 6.5 year old, she has forward tongue thrust because of sucking her thumb and her tongue hangs out her mouth! The orthadontist says she has to give up her thumb sucking and hopefully the problem will become less apparant.

DD started sucking her thumb 6 months ago and now, age 3, it has obviously distorted her teeth.

DS1 (10) had very bad distortion of his front teeth due to thumbsucking. He is now having expensive and uncomfortable orthodontic treatment to correct the damage.

SD - when was DD 3?

My dentist has said my 3 year old and 4 year old will prob both need braces. They are prolific thumb suckers and it drives me loopy. Have tried everything to get them to stop. Any tips gratefully recieved!

DD - At what age did the dentist first notice there was a problem?
