Speech delay - quick update

just a wee update on the latest with my DS2. He had his hearing test today which showed absolutely no abnormalities or hearing problems at all. Which puts us right back to square one. So we should have another meeting with the speech therapist and in the meantime we are still trying the few simple signs i have managed to master and a lot of face to face interaction.

I am sorry. How old is he? (Sorry, I didn't see your other thread).

I know with ds feeling strangely relieved when we were told he had a problem with his hearing, as it was a reason for his speech delay.

Since then, we've really focused on the signs - he's understanding lots of them and is using several, which helps him communicate. The other thing that's working is to keep our sentences very simple - two or three words - and to use lots of repetition. I'm also trying very hard to avoid questions when they aren't needed - so I don't say "what's that?" and hope he'll answer, I say "oh, look, a lovely car" (or something). Since we started using this approach as recommended by the SALT his vocabulary has improved a lot - even in 4 weeks.

Sorry he'll be 2 on the 24th of this month. well my sister reckons that using signing is giving him another excuse not to talk but my feeling is that every little has got to help right? he is a gorgoeus, lively happy wee soul and everyone who knows him just loves him to bits. He understands almost everything you say to him i think i was just really hoping that the hearing test would show some problem.

Do you have any other concerns apart from speech ? If he's understanding what you say then that's a very good sign. Signing won't stop him speaking.
