7 month old not sitting unsupported yet, should I be worried?

He has his 7 month review next week, and I know they like them to sit on the floor and play with the things hv will give him.

If he is not sitting, shall I just keep him on my knee instead?

Is it something to worry about yet?

He holds his head really well, and looks and grabs for things he sees, so think he is ok in that way. He also wont roll over.

It's not uncommon, one of mine was 11 months - she was a great lump of a thing too - had to keep her rear facing for ages way past the weight range!

FairySparkles · 05/03/2009 15:19

My friends dd was pretty slow with all her developments (except a full mouth of teeth by 10months!!) our little social circle of mums & babies saw all of ours doing stuff early but not hers, she got a bit worried and by her 1st b'day she still wasn't crawling - then out of nowhere she's started crawling, standing, and walking all in one week!! they go at their own pace so don't worry too much - just mention it to the hv when you go for the check up if your concerned!

kidcreoleandthecoconuts · 05/03/2009 15:23

Dont worry. My DD wasnt doing anything at her developmental check. She's 12 months and just started sitting unaided. She also rolls around the floor but doesnt crawl or weight bear on her legs much. She's due another check now and I'm tempted not to go as my HV is a scaremonger! If she's not crawling etc by 18 months I'll take her to the GP myself.

Don't worry - DS only sat at 8mo. NCT lot were quite weird with me about it (their little perfect ones sat perfectly by 6mo of course!)

MmeLindt · 05/03/2009 15:28

Don't worry. DD was standing before she could sit. She did not sit until she was about a year.

bubblagirl · 05/03/2009 15:33

i'm sure my ds was nearing 8 mths before he did this without stacks of pillows behind him etc we sat him on floor always propped up with lots of pillows and lots around him in case he tipped either way

Divvy · 05/03/2009 16:32

Thanks, I am sure hv will want him back in a month to check he is sitting I bet.

Unless he cracks it in the next 6 days!

My DD didn't sit until 9 months.

She wasn't fine though.

Divvy · 05/03/2009 16:43

Oh gosh, in what way? xx

Dd was 8 months.

strictmumof3 · 05/03/2009 16:52

don't worry about it. My youngest was cruising before he could sit. HV sometimes worry for the sake of it.

ICANDOTHAT · 05/03/2009 16:52

My ds didn't sit unaided until 8 months. Was crawling beforehand for short while and walking at 12 months. Really not that unusual.

dilemma01 · 05/03/2009 16:53

DT2 could crawl and walk around furniture before she could sit up, she finally sat unaided at 14 months, she was referred to a physio but nothing was wrong.

Sheeta · 05/03/2009 19:49

btw, should add that DS was rolling and almost crawling, and just didn't want to be still. EVER.

Why would he want to sit?

Nabster · 06/03/2009 11:09

She had a couple of problems but is fine now.

Divvy · 06/03/2009 13:17

Good xx

my DD was 8 months and DS 8.5 months before they sat. Both also went quite suddenly from looking nowhere near to being able to do it fine. don't worry yet

georgimama · 06/03/2009 14:29

Ds wasn't sitting unsupported when health visitor came to do check at 8 months. He did it about a week later!

He crawled at about 10 months and walked at 15 months. He walked very confidently, very quickly, including backwards which he found immensely amusing.

As he seems otherwise to be developing fine - grabbing at things etc, dont' worry. You could try to encourage the sitting by propping himin a seated position on the floor with cushions - that gave DS the idea. I don't think it had occurred to him to sit anywhere but my lap until then.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 06/03/2009 14:35

My ds2 wasn't anywhere near sitting at his 8 month check.

Luckily the GP who do the ceck knows our family well. DS1 was also towards the end of the "normal" ranges on his developmenet so the GP started by asking "is he rolling yet?! which he was!

Your ds sounds like he's developing just fine. He'll do it when he's good and ready!
