Ds 2 undid his car seat safety strap - what do you all do when this happens????

Ds 2 is 16 months and fab with his fingers. (DS 1 wasn't so we never had this!)
He can press the button and undo his safety straps on our car seat.

What can I cover it with to stop him doing this??????

Saying no just won't work as he's in the back of the car and too young to realise the safety implications!

Unless you are on the motorway, stop the car, say "the car won't drive if the belt is not done up". Belt him up, set off again.
If he keeps doing it, (especially if he knows you are going somewhere nice) turn around and go home.

Fo rpersistent offenders, you can get some extra clip things that they can't undo. You do need to get the proper ones though, so they are easy to release in an emergency. My friend got them for her son, off the internet, but not sure where exactly.

choccyp1g · 02/03/2009 14:27

For persistent offenders, that should have said.

thatsnotmymonster · 02/03/2009 14:29

wow he must be strong. Even my 4yo ds can't undo his. What kind of car seat is it?

Rhubarb · 02/03/2009 14:32

Ds went through a phase of doing this.

I would pull over. Get him out of the car. Bring your face up to his. Tell him very sternly that he is not to do that. Put him back.

dh actually braked once when ds did it, not very hard but enough to make ds topple over. I'm not applauding his actions though, in fact I bloody yelled at him for being so stupid, but it scared ds and made him realise what the seatbelts are there for.

muppetgirl · 02/03/2009 17:41

thanks for that, yes he is strong he's the size of a 2 year old and wears 2 year old clothes (well I suppose he would do!)
He doesn't walk so spends all his energies pulling, flicking, undoing etc. He's nearl;y had the plug socket covers out the wall. ds 1 was NOTHING like this!!!

I thought dh hadn't done it up properly but he said he saw him put his hands down on the red button and push and it undid...

It's a britax car seat I think

I went loopy the only time ds did it. I yelled "you never never do that again" really loud until he finally said "ok" in the style of a stroppy teenager. Hasn't done it again so far.

sparkle12mar08 · 02/03/2009 21:51

This happened with my just gone two year old. I went absolutely nuclear at him, mostly through my own panic. Suffice to say it has not happened again... Do second the extra clips though, well worth the peace of mind.

nannyL · 02/03/2009 22:07

i suggest a maxi cosi car seat

ours in 5 years old, been used daily, my 3 year old (the size of a 5 year old) cant undo it and sometimes i have to press very hard!

ICANDOTHAT · 02/03/2009 22:12

I bought a special device from Halfords or Mothercare that goes over the buckles. Way too tricky even for the more clued up kiddy Can't remember what it was called. Try googling something like 'child car seat safety clips'

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2009 09:28

ex dc did this - but was older

i stopped the car and YELLED

he needs to know he cant do this as it is dangerous

Rhubarb - i know of a mum who did what your dh did, yes it is dangerous but bet it got the point across!!!

I work at Jojo Maman Bebe. We sell the car seat belt protector things. If you haven't got a store near you, go on the website and look for practical products or travel related things. They sell like hot cakes!
