How old was your DC before they could wipe their own bottom??

I'm asking because my DS is 3.5 and asks for me or my partner to do it. He starts school in September and will obviously need to be able to do it himself by then. Should he be able to it by himself by now?

DTS (5) try to do it themselves, but often need help, dt1 often goes into my room armed with toilet roll, pants round her ankles, and bends right over in front of my long lengh miorror so she can see what she is doing I laughed my head off when I first saw her do it

ThePellyandMe · 26/02/2009 16:17

Right well DS1 is erm, nearly 6 and a half and won't wipe himself very often.

DS2 who is 4 and a half will but every now and again he moans and says he shouldn't have to do it every time

Neither of them do poo's at school as a rule. DS1 in Y1 never has. DS2 did once and cleaned himself...sort of.

LOL dilemma01, DS2 bends down and pulls his bum cheeks apart so I can chek if he's clean or not.

ds is 5 and still doesn't do a good job.

TigerFeet · 26/02/2009 16:19

My DH DD is 40 4.8 and still doesn't get it right every time.

unpaidworker · 26/02/2009 16:59

I would defintley make sure they will and can do it before school as the teachers/assistants etc will not do it.

My twins are also 6. When they were 5 i was called into school several times to wipe their bottoms after a number 2 as the teachers and TA's cannot do it.

DD is fine wiping her own bum now but I still wipe DS bum as he seems unable to do it properly yet.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/02/2009 19:09

i teach my charges to do it theirslevs at around 3 3.5 as they need to learn and pratice before going to school

tecahers cant and wont wipe - and tbh why should they

at 5 children should be able to - but they only can if they have been taught, shown and allowed to pratice BEFORE they are at school

you hear about lots of children who wont poo at school and scred they cant wipe their selves

i start off by showing them, then by letting them try and me looking/wiping afterwards, then doing it theirselves

yes you gte a few skiddy pants but they get the hang of it

brimfull · 26/02/2009 19:13

My ds is 6 and I still get the call "finished"
He can do it but seems to have a problme doing it well iykwim.I make him do it then he wants me to check. He says his arms aren't long enough
He never poos at school and would just get on with it if he did

QOD · 26/02/2009 19:21

lol my dd has pooped at school once and it just plopped out with no warnng LMAO - she could do it but wouldnt unless no one was there.

Seona1973 · 26/02/2009 19:47

dd (5.3 years) learned around the age of 4 and that was after me refusing to do it for her one day. She sat on the toilet for about 10/15 minutes before trying. I still get asked to check after she has wiped and most times she has done a good job. She has never pooed at school yet.
