According to my mum, we were all trained by the time we were one but in those days, it was all about potty-timing rather than training i.e. if you put them on the potty enough times during the day, you'll get enough successes.

I trained my first at 2 and my second child at 2 and a half. It's definitely not something to rush into. You'll know when your child is ready (probably around age 2 - 3). I'm afraid this is another one of those MIL comments you'll have to let pass!

DS has eczema, and when he was about 1 yrs old,MIL told me that she knew somebody with an eczema child whos was trained at 5m. So I said: Wow! very impresive, been potty trained even before he can sit on his own-

Sometimes afterwards she told me that her late DH was potty trained at 8m, and he was also able to to say popo please. Again, I believe this family must have been made of genious as the child in question was not even walking.

So... don't stress yourself about it, it;'s better to wait until they are ready, good signs include walking, been able to obey simple orders and point to parts of their body, being able to put down/up their trousers is definitively a plus, and stay dry for at least two hours.

I think DS (25m) is showing most of the sign but until he learns not to place the potty on his head I'm NOT allowing him to use it without a nappy!!!

mm, you're being a bit impatient! It's lunchtime, people might be away from their computers for a while.

FWIW, your MIL can be safely ignored. Potty training at that age, doesn't involve the child actually recognising that he needs a wee/ poo then getting to the potty, pulling his own pants down, then performing. It's a case of sticking the child on the potty at times when you know he's going to go (i.e. after meals). Boys are more likely to train later that girls, so I think you're wise not to bother yet. Wait till he can tell you that his nappy is wet/ dirty.

Meggymoo - I suggest your mil is a big fat liar!

My understanding is that it's not until about at least 2 that children understand the feeling of needing of going to the loo and the resulting action etc. All children are different and some will be early/late potty trainers - stressing them out will only make them upset etc.

Did your dh also play the piano at 18 months, tap dance at 20 months and write his first novel at 3?

DD was trained at 2 years, i agree, it would be the impossible to do it any younger!

I do think though, that it helps to introduce the potty earlier.

From the age of 1 my dd had a potty, and sat on it when she fancied it, before bath, or when i was using the toilet. She did the occasional wee and learnt what it was all about. This progressed onto a painless training once she turned two!

Maybe you could buy one for this reason, and it may keep MIL happy!

My dd is 18m and I had my 1st go this morning which ended in quite a few accidents. So in my opinion 10m is very young!
You could always give him a potty to play with though, may get him used to it

If she really did remotely train her children that young it was probably more by luck or she was constantly watching them and plonked them on at any sign they were likely to go. I wonder how long they had accidents for and think they were probably no more reliable earlier than today's tots. imho You are right about the developmant of bladder/bowel awareness frm about 18 months.

tbh I feel life is just too short to force the issue. Your ds may be ready sooner than 2 or much later, but you will sense when the timing is right for you both. @ mil !

You lazy? Apart of my concerns explained above, the most important reason to wait in our case is that we travel a lot and don't want to be bothered yet with the race of finding a toilet in less than 2minutes once they are out of the nappy

My mum started making similar comments when dd turned 1. I think finally she's accepted that advice is different these days - as with weaning where it's pointless feeding a baby solids until they can physically sit up and swallow, she's accepted that until they can actually tell you they need the toilet and physically pull their own pants down there's no benefit in rushing it.

Whereas the benefit years ago was not having all those nappies to wash by hand.
