Speech problems due to hearing problems

My 2.4 dd has very little speech it has been put down to hearing problems linked to glue ear and possible damage done when ill (being looked into). I am getting really upset by this as others have started to comment(she just babbles away to herslef) other children her age are now starting to make friends as can talk to each other - she tries but obviously she makes no sense to them.

Speech therapist has given us makaton sheets but I'm finding it hard to learn/remebmer to do and my dh and mother are refusing to learn it as they feel she is sudenly going to hear fine and everything will be fine.

I just dont know what to do for the best has anyone else got any ideas?

Hi,

My dd2 is 2.7 and was born with a very wide cleft lip and palette. This was corrected last year but she too has very little speech. She also has glue ear and luckily she is going in to have gromits put in next week but I have had to battle hard to get that done.

Like your daughter she "bambles" non stop and only her close family can understand the few words she has.

I get lots of looks and comments from other adults and I also find it hard to explain her situation.

She has no regular speech therapy although she is on a waiting list.

Have you tried watching Something Special? My dd loves it and I find we are picking it up quite quickly.

At least we can understand what she wants to eat, drink, play etc which helps avoid tanturms.

It's hard I know and I find it so sad when she tries to make friends and because no -one understands they just smile and walk away. Adults are the worst for that.

My in-laws too are ignoring the problem.

Like you I just want the best for her.

Would be nice to chat to someone else in the same position.
