Strange BF behaviour

For the last month my ds, now 5.5 months has been acting really strangely when he BF in the day.
As I get ready to put him on he gets really stressed, breathes really fast and then sucks hard like he is desperate to eat - like he is really hungry. However a few minutes later he will come off the breast really agitated and start thrashing around and shouting and crying. If I hug him a bit I can get him back on again but then he is off again a few minutes later. Feeding are not relaxing any more and I don't think he is getting enough food - hence lots of night waking recently to eat. He has no problems eating in the middle of the night when he is nice and sleepy - he takes a good feed then.
I've tried winding him and I don't think it's wind.
There is always lots of milk left so it's not that I've run out.
Maybe let-down is too slow? But why is he OK at night?
Getting quite stressed - not to mention v. tired so any ideas would be really welcome. Or if anyone else has had the same problem.

have you tried a different position ( for him & or you) As babies get bigger ( longer) some like to be a bit more upright, r a change of his latch may have crept in which is making it tricky for him. Any how an experiment with a different hold won't cost any thing or do any harm.

or is it that he has started to get distracted by all that is going on around you during the day. Have you tried feeding him in a quiet boring place during the day?

might it be teething? My dd went a bit like this when she was first getting teeth coming down and she had a weekend nursing strike at 7m.Maybe he is hungry but his mouth or ears are sore.Get your gp to check his ears.does he have any teeth yet?if not maybe he will in a few weeks.

Thanks for the replies.

He's definitely teething at the moment so it might be that.

He does get very distracted but then he just looks around rather than getting stressed. Already have to feed him where it is boring as even my dh coming into the room makes him look up!
