I would like to buy some books for 8 year old coming on 9. He isn't really into reading himself but likes to be read to and loves story on CDs. Loves Dr. Who and very typical boy who loves to play. Any recommendation on some books I can get him so that he could get into reading for himself? I don't want to get board book type for babies, but it should look easy to read so it doesn't put him off.

MNHQ Update
This is an old thread, but if you've landed here while on the hunt for similar recommendations, our guide to the best books for eight-year-olds has been recently updated. It includes a wide range of options, from best-sellers to lesser known gems, and has been complied using recommendations from Mumsnet users. We hope it’s helpful! Flowers

I've just ordered a series of Walker Books from Red House books (they were on special offer). They all have the same format - three chapters - but are easy to read and follow and the dss love them. I got a very good deal which worked out at around £1 per book.
