Dunno, my DS is 3 and we still haven't found the volume switch...

apart from saying "sshhh" gently and talking quietly back to him I'm not sure. Hesitate to say this because I don't want to worry you but have you thought about having his hearing tested, just to rule out a possible problem? My DS started to talk very loudly and we found out he had glue ear (ie nothing serious)

If he isn't in pain and he isn't shouting out BASTARD BITCH or BIG FAT ELEPHANT FANNY then I would ignore it or use duct tape.

Do boys have a volume switch? I've been looking for 7 years....

Have you ever had his hearing tested ? My friend has a little boy who was always shouting and "ignoring" her or so she thought, he has since had grommits put in and is no longer shouting !
